Youngsters open art exhibition at Newhaven Town station

Students from Harbour Primary School show off their amazing artwork

An art exhibition, of artwork done by year 4 pupils at Harbour Primary has been unveiled in the waiting shelter at Newhaven Town Station.

The artwork is the culmination of a joint project which saw the children study all aspects of Sustainable Travel before creating 6 inspiring artworks to adorn the shelter at the station.

The exhibition was officially launched by pupils from the school to an audience of local councillors, parents, Southern railway staff, and members of Sustrans and the Sussex Community Rail Partnership.

The children also practiced their cycling skills and cycled to Seaford, before learning a new skill of taking their bike on the train from Seaford to Newhaven Town to attend the opening.

Holly and Joe, students of Harbour Primary, Newhaven, said: “We learnt that trains and buses are more sustainable than cars. It took team work to make this project happen.”

Southern’s Station Manager Andy Gardner said: “We are delighted to work with local schools and are pleased that the children will have learnt so much about sustainable travel and the railway. The splash of colour that this wonderful artwork brings to the station, will, I am sure be appreciated by our passengers.”

Southern and East Sussex County Council are also working with the Seaford to Brighton line of the Sussex Community Rail Partnership and the South Downs National Park to reconnect the community to its railway, encourage rail travel and to contribute to reduced emission targets.
