Press release -

UK’s largest rail operator on the hunt for new engineers

  • Govia Thameslink Railway recruiting for Level 1 service engineers

Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) is calling for budding engineers to fill at least 25 vacancies across three of its depots.

The company is looking for Level 1 service engineers, which is an entry level role into the field of engineering, to work across Brighton, Battersea and Selhurst depots. Duties will include carrying out repair work and component changes, as well as taking part in routine maintenance and fault-finding of train and train parts under the supervision of team leaders and managers.

Degree-level qualifications are not required for these vacancies, instead, the company is interested to hear from people who have had hands-on experience in engineering or mechanics and have ideally carried out an NVQ in this field.

Jason Long, Head of Fleet at Govia Thameslink Railway, said: “We’re looking to recruit the next generation of railway engineers that help us to keep trains running for thousands of passengers every day. It’s an exciting time to join GTR as an engineer as we are currently undergoing a multimillion-pound upgrade to our Class 377 fleet of trains. The project is running until 2025, so new engineering candidates will be able to get hands-on with the improvements that are set to make journeys better and more reliable.

“We’re looking for people who have relevant experience in the field of engineering and can demonstrate their passion to work in the rail industry. If that sounds like you, don’t hesitate to apply!”

Although this is an entry level role, the company is offering an attractive starting salary of £37,877.

Vacancies are live now. Interested candidates should visit the GTR career site, search for jobs and select ‘engineering’.

Proving that it’s never too late to do something you love is Yvonne Baiden, who began her engineering career at GTR aged 51. Yvonne always wanted to pursue working in electricals but didn’t get the chance to until she was in her late thirties. Yvonne works in the Selhurst depot and hopes to see females of all ages applying for the latest engineering roles.

Keen to begin his career in engineering as soon as he could is Jensen Joy, who joined GTR’s engineering apprenticeship programme last year aged just 16. He is now in his second year with the operator and is relishing the opportunity to earn a wage, whilst many of his peers are still at school.

ENDS

Notes to editors:

  • GTR is looking to fill at least 25 vacancies with people who have transferable skills, some relevant experience and the ability to pass DP Track and PTS courses, unless exempt.
  • Passionate engineers who don’t yet have experience in the field should keep their eyes on the GTR website in October, when the next wave of Engineering Apprenticeships go live.
