‘Mr Enfield’ helps Enfield Chase station earn floral award

A local resident dubbed ‘Mr Enfield’ for the work he has done his community, has helped Great Northern’s town station earn an award for its floral display.

With a small donation from Great Northern, Dave Cockle, of Millers Green Close, has with his friend John Cordell of Chase Court Gardens, cultivated planters of geraniums on the station platforms of Enfield Chase station and trailing plants in the waiting room.

The display has now been awarded a certificate of merit in the public buildings section of the borough-wide Enfield in Bloom scheme.

Great Northern station manager Bill Hamilton said: “We’re thrilled with Dave and John’s work which has really brightened up the station for our passengers.”

Mr Cockle said: “I have always lived in Enfield and I’ve heard them call me Mr Enfield! I was born in Chase Farm Hospital, went to school at Ponders End and I’m now chairman of the Enfield Society.

“We’re really pleased with the award after all the work we’ve put in. We did have some strawberries in the planters as well, which we’ve shared with the station staff – they were very grateful!

“The station’s looking good now – Great Northern has repainted it, refurbished the toilets and people comment, particularly if they see us working on the planters – they say it’s nice to see; they do appreciate it.”

He also gives talks on railway history and, as Great Northern’s ‘Station Adopter’ for Enfield Chase, maintains a community noticeboard at the station as well and has put up an historical display.
