Go-Learn with Southern

Safety is Southern Railway’s top priority and it’s never too early to learn about how to stay safe when travelling by train.

Over the summer term, Southern Rail Neighbourhood Officers visited five primary schools in Thornton Heath area seeing over 1,200 school children as part of a drive to bring transport education into schools.

The Rail Neighbourhood Officers met each class across each of the five Pegasus Academy Trust schools and joined in assemblies to promote railway track safety as well as giving the pupils their top tips on how to stay safe using public transport, where to find information and who to approach if they need help. Pupils were invited to visit Southern’s interactive education van which is styled as a train carriage which helped bring their transport education to life.

Nicola Hall, Deputy Head of School, Pegasus Academy Trust said: ‘It is important for our children to understand the ways in which they can keep themselves safe when using the rail network. I thought the safety workshops really made clear the hazards associated with the use of platforms and the dangers of misuse of railway lines and tracks. Our children were particularly excited to climb on board the transport bus as it gave them a real reference point when talking about rail safety what with it being fitted out like a train!’
