A slice and a smile at Lewes station

Karen Fullbrook, Southern Railway Ticket Office Clerk, has raised over £420 for Macmillan Cancer Support with a cake sale at Lewes station on the charity's national Cake Day.

Karen’s colleagues at the station weighed in with their big bakes, and a number of her regular commuting customers also produced cakes for the sale including John Henty, a local journalist whose home-made Victoria sponge sold out in record time. As well as providing the cake, John spent an hour helping Karen on her stall.

At the 6:30am start of the sale Karen was able to cover a two-metre trestle table with cakes, tarts, brownies, sausage rolls, pork pies, fairy cakes and Polish cheesecake.

Karen said: “I’m surprised and delighted at how well the morning went, especially as it’s the first Macmillan cake sale I’ve done. Our passengers were very generous – some didn’t feel like eating cakes just after dawn so just donated money instead.”

Station Manager Andy Gardner said: “The sale went really well, brightening up our passengers’ otherwise dull, dreary autumn morning with Karen's smile and the offer of great cake!”
