Medical Records at the click of a button

Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust last year finished digitising 446,000 patient records.

The milestone marked the end of a four-year implementation project, where the trust scanned its paper records into 'Unity' an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system supplied by Fortrus Ltd.

The Trust expects it to save £2.6 million a year in reduced operating costs and improved efficiencies.

The EMR system, 'Unity' provided by Fortrus was introduced at Basildon & Thurrock University Hospital to improve health care delivery and provide better-integrated health and related services. Unity is a clinical decision support tool which allows clinicians 24-hour access to structured, historic information about their patients, entailing the digital capture of almost half a million patient case notes.
