ESVAGT speaks English

Press release -

ESVAGT speaks English

An offer of a maritime English course for the employees has caused a deluge of registrations.

”It is wonderful to see such a great interest”, says Nick Ørskov.

Nick Ørskov, the ESVAGT HR manager, was somewhat surprised when he offered a course in maritime English paid for by the company – and topped up with wage subsidies.

- A few of our sailors had asked about courses in English, and on that background we had a talk with the VUC (Educational Centre for Adults) to compose a course that would meet our needs, says Nick Ørskov.

Based on this, he estimated that about 10 to 12 people could get started with the course, and he mentioned a number of participants of 20 to 25 as a criterium for success. But that was way under the target.

- We got 65 applications from colleagues who wanted to participate, so instead of one teacher we ended up having three, says Nick Ørskov.

ESVAGT will pay for the course and pay wages to people for participating – the latter depending on the level of education, however. The large number of participants means that ESVAGT will have to pay a little more for the course than had originally been planned.

- This is probably the first time anyone has heard me being pleased with a high cost level, but in this case I am. This is an expression of the fact that people are interested in developing their skills and competence, and that is wonderful. We, as a workplace, can only be pleased with that. We are an international company that operates from Egypt to the North of Norway, and the need for knowing other languages is on the increase, says Nick Ørskov.

By the way, the participants of the courses are equally spread over all staff groups.
