'Esvagt Cornelia' rescues an exhausted Norwegian sailor
The crew on 'Esvagt Cornelia' made a difference at the Balder field in the Norwegian Sector by coming to rescue of an exhausted Norwegian senior sailor.
The sailor was on his way in the ship 'Why Knot' from the Shetland Islands to Norway. Here his autopilot set out, and he had to take over and steer the ship himself. He contacted the Norwegian rescue service Sola and told that he was getting exhausted after 36 hours at the helm with manual steering. When Sola couldn't get in touch with the sailor, Balder Control was asked to send 'Esvagt Cornelia' to check on the sailor.
'Esvagt Cornelia' found 'Why Knot' 12 nautical miles from Balder; put the FRB on the water and made contract with the sailor, who was very exhausted. The crew brought the sailor back to 'Esvagt Cornelia' and after a check at the hospital had confirmed that the sailor was just tired, he got a bed. Here he slept 12 hours in a row.
'Esvagt Cornelia' took the sailboat on tow away from the Balder field, and both sailor and boat was handed over to the Coastal rescue.
Great work from the crew, who reacted on the emergency call. Good training in rapid response, strong communication on board, FRB evacuation, hospital examination of distressed and mental first aid, towing and subsequent helicopter evacuation. Really good collaboration and accurate reporting ended a great effort. Bravo Zulu, 'Esvagt Cornelia'!
