Explore Nikko’s Autumn Top Three Must-Visit Spots with TOBU Railway

As the vibrant colours of autumn arrive, TOBU Railway invites travellers to experience the breathtaking beauty of Nikkothrough its special autumn train tourism offerings. With the crisp air and stunning seasonal foliage, Nikko becomes a top destination for those looking to immerse themselves in nature. This autumn, TOBU is highlighting its scenic train routes to enhance the visitor experience by offering exciting ways to explore and capture the region's beauty.

As we focus on the splendour of Nikko this season, here are three must-visit tourist spots to add to your itinerary, especially for those visiting in autumn.

1. Ryuzu Falls – A Dragon’s Head in a Cascade of Autumn Leaves

A crown jewel of Oku-Nikko, Ryuzu Fallsis one of the region’s three most famous waterfalls. This stunning waterfall flows 210 meters over stepped rock formations, created by lava from the eruption of Mt. Nantai. Its name, meaning "Dragon's Head Falls," comes from the way the cascade splits near the basin, resembling the head and beard of a dragon.

While springtime visitors can enjoy the blooming Tougoku Mitsuba Azaleas, it’s the autumn season when the falls truly come to life. The vivid hues of maples and linden trees, which start to change colour by late September, create an early and dramatic autumn display. Travellers enjoy the view from the observation deck for panoramic waterfall views, framed by a tapestry of autumn leaves.

For more information, visit the Ryuzu Falls page.

2. Lake Chuzenji – Serenity by the Water, Wrapped in Autumn Beauty

Situated at an altitude of 1,269 meters, Lake Chuzenji is one of Japan’s highest and most scenic lakes. Formed nearly 20,000 years ago by lava from Mt. Nantai, this lake covers a circumference of about 25 km and reaches depths of 163 meters. It has long been a favourite destination for foreign visitors, dating back to the Meiji and Showa periods.

The lake offers breathtaking views in every season, but autumn transforms it into a palette of vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows. Travellers can enjoy these scenes from the idyllic lakeside or board a sightseeing boat, which offers a unique perspective during the annual "Maple Leaves Tour." A boat ride on Lake Chuzenji is the perfect way to take in the majestic landscapes, as the mirrored water reflects the surrounding foliage and mountains.

3. Akechidaira Ropeway – A Panoramic Gateway to Nikko’s Natural Wonders

For unparalleled panoramic views of Nikko’s stunning autumn landscape, a ride on the Akechidaira Ropeway is a must. The ropeway takes travellers to an observation deck at an altitude of 1,373 meters in just three minutes. From there, visitors are treated to sweeping views of Kegon Falls, Lake Chuzenji, and Mt. Nantai. The observation deck also serves as a starting point for those who wish to embark on a hike towards Chanokidaira or Lake Chuzenji, offering further opportunities to immerse yourself in nature.

While the autumn foliage is undeniably the highlight of the season, the ropeway and observation deck also offer stunning views of spring’s red rhododendrons and fresh summer greenery. Whether you're looking to capture the beauty of the vibrant leaves or simply enjoy the fresh mountain air, Akechidaira is a top destination this season.
