The French low-cost carrier Transavia France will set up operations in the Swedish market for the first time with non-stop service from Stockholm Arlanda Airport to the city of Montpellier on the southern coast of France.
During February, 271,000 passengers flew via Swedavia’s ten airports, a decrease of 90 per cent compared to February last year, when Swedavia had 2,631,000 passengers. The deterioration in the air travel market continued in February, with a weaker trend primarily in international travel.
Swedavia’s Year-End Report for 2020 is dominated by the historic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on air travel and Swedavia’s own operations. Swedavia entered the crisis with a good financial position and carried out drastic measures, but is nonetheless reporting a pre-tax loss of almost 1.7 billion Swedish kronor. The pandemic has also dominated the start of 2021, with very low passenger levels.
During January, 342,000 passengers flew via Swedavia’s ten airports, a decrease of 87 per cent compared to January 2020, when Swedavia had 2,670,000 passengers. Air travel in January continued to be strongly affected by the coronavirus pandemic and new travel restrictions. Despite ongoing vaccination efforts, air travel is expected to be sharply limited in the months ahead.
During November, 386,000 passengers flew via Swedavia’s ten airports, a decrease of 87 per cent compared to 3,001,000 passengers for the same period last year. Due to the increased spread of Covid-19, combined with new restrictions, what was already very limited demand for air travel further weakened in November.
One of Sweden’s biggest tour operators, TUI, is expanding its offering at Swedavia’s Stockholm Arlanda, Göteborg Landvetter and Malmö Airports. The company is launching new direct routes to Scandinavian Mountains Airport in Sälen in time for the winter season.
During September, 643,000 passengers flew via Swedavia’s ten airports, a decrease of 83 per cent compared to 3,678,000 passengers during the same month last year. Domestic travel decreased to a lesser extent than international travel, but the recovery stagnated during the month and demand for flights remained at historically low levels as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The capital of Sweden is home to 22 global multinational corporations, a figure making Stockholm the third most popular city in Europe when opening a global headquarter, according to a new report. Foreign companies account for 85 percent of all the headquarters in Stockholm.

The recovery in air traffic continued compared to the preceding months but slowed somewhat in late August due to decreased leisure travel. The market situation remains strongly affected by the global Covid-19 pandemic.
In June, 179,000 passengers flew via Swedavia’s ten airports, a decrease of 95 per cent compared to the same month last year, when there were 3,845,000 passengers. For the third straight month, air travel was strongly affected by the impact of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. Some traffic started up again at the airports primarily at the end of the month, and this trend is expected to continue.
The European carrier easyJet is returning to Stockholm Arlanda after a three-month pause, launching a new direct route to London Gatwick while also resuming service to Berlin, Geneva and Milan in July.
In May, more than 80,000 passengers flew via Swedavia’s ten airports, a full 98 per cent decrease compared to the same month in 2019, when there were a total of 3,600,000 passengers. For the second straight month, results were affected by the full impact of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. This trend is also expected to continue in June although there are some signs of a restart.
