Swedavia has decided to implement an action programme in order to adapt its operations in the face of a dramatic decline in passenger volume combined with uncertain market prospects. Operations in the company will be adapted to a minimal level based on the market situation, and at the bigger airports, operations will be concentrated temporarily to certain sections.
In February, over 2,631,000 passengers flew via Swedavia’s ten airports, which is a decrease of 6 per cent compared to the same month last year. Profit was positively affected by the extra leap year day during the month. The consequences of the coronavirus outbreak had a limited impact, but it is expected to affect the passenger trend to a much greater extent in March.
In 2019, more than 40 million passengers flew to or from Swedavia’s airports. Net revenue for the period increased to more than 6.2 billion Swedish kronor and operating profit increased to more than 700 million kronor. The year was marked by investments to improve efficiency, develop the airports and help bring about the aviation industry’s transformation in the face of climate change.
Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) is expanding at Stockholm Arlanda Airport and will launch non-stop service to the polish capital Warsaw. This new route increases the range of destinations with yet one more route to the growing market of Poland.
Swedavia is one of the first airport operators in the world to invite organisations such as SOS Alarm, Systembolaget, and the 2030 Secretariat, whose goal is to achieve fossil-fuel independence in the Swedish transport sector, to purchase bio jet fuel as part of a public tender. The aim is to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from business flights and promote large-scale production of bio jet fuel.
Norwegian is expanding at Stockholm Arlanda Airport and will launch three new direct routes to eastern European countries during the spring of 2020. The new destinations are Palanga (Lithuania), Gdansk (Poland) and Tivat (Montenegro).
In October, 3,531,000 passengers flew via Swedavia’s ten airports, which is a decrease of almost 5 per cent compared to the same month last year. This month, a continued weaker trend for domestic travel was noted, while international traffic decreased to a lesser extent and scheduled European traffic was basically unchanged compared to October last year.
In September, 3,678,000 passengers flew to or from Swedavia’s ten airports, which is a decrease of 2 per cent compared to the same month last year. The general decline in passenger volume seen over the past few months stabilised somewhat in September.
On February 29, 2020, Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) will start flying non-stop once a week to Seville from Stockholm Arlanda Airport. It will be SAS’s sixth destination in the popular country of Spain, to which more than 2.2 million passengers fly each year from Stockholm Arlanda. SAS is the only airline that offers non-stop service on this route.
In July, 3,773,000 passengers flew to or from Swedavia’s ten airports, which is a decrease of 4 per cent compared to the same month last year. The traffic trend was in line with the figures for previous months in 2019.
During the period January-June, nearly 20 million passengers flew to or from Swedavia’s airports. Swedavia’s net revenue and operating profit improved to nearly 3.1 billion Swedish kronor and 348 million kronor, respectively. Swedavia’s investments to develop access at its airports and transform aviation in the face of climate change continue.
During the month of May, 3,636,000 passengers flew to or from one of Swedavia’s ten airports, which is a 5 per cent decrease compared to the same month last year. The international travel increased at several of the airports. Figures were adversely affected even this month by the pilot strike at the beginning of the month.
