Record number of passengers in 2013

Press release -

Record number of passengers in 2013

Some 33.4 million passengers travelled to or from one of Swedavia’s ten airports in 2013. The number of passengers is thus 1.3 million more than the previous record, set in 2102. This trend is driven mainly by increased international travel, both in Europe and beyond.

The number of passengers at Swedavia’s airports increased four per cent in 2013 compared to 2012. In all, 33.4 million people flew to or from one of the company’s ten airports. The number of international passengers increased six per cent while the number of domestic passengers was up one per cent.

“The increase in passenger numbers is a result of many airlines having decided to invest in new non-stop routes, which facilitates travel and enhances Swedish competitiveness,” says Torborg Chetkovich, chief executive of Swedavia.

Passenger growth, for both domestic and international travel, took place mainly in the last two quarters of the year. After the first half of the year, growth was up only one per cent. Notably, domestic travel fell three per cent during the first six months of the year but then rebounded significantly.

“We could see a change during the spring, and with the new routes launched and announced after that, combined with a major influx of business travellers in scheduled service, we are cautiously optimistic about the future,” says Ms Chetkovich.

2013 was a record year in passenger numbers for the following Swedavia airports:

Stockholm Arlanda Airport: 20.7 million
Göteborg Landvetter Airport: 5 million
Malmö Airport: 2.1 million
Luleå Airport: 1.1 million
Umeå Airport: 990,000
Kiruna Airport: 226,000

In 2013, the number of landings in schedule and charter operations at Swedavia’s airports was about 200,000, which was two per cent more than in 2012.
