Stockholmsmässan’s most successful year ever

2010 was a record year for Stockholmsmässan, Scandinavia’s largest exhibition and congress center. The turnover figure of SEK 736 million was the company’s highest ever, and profit reached SEK 20 million. Stockholmsmässan’s activities also generated SEK 4.1 billion for the capital’s business community, another record high in the company’s history.

“2010 was a fantastic congress year for Stockholmsmässan, including two of the world’s largest medical congresses in the same month. The fact that such selective clients choose to come back to us time after time is clear proof of our high and consistent quality. It also shows how important close collaboration within the visitor industry is. Of course, we as a facility need to deliver top-class services, but it is also essential to offer an excellent range of hotels, restaurants and transport services in the city. We have already had useful discussions with many players, but these have intensified during the year and I am looking forward to even closer collaboration in the future,” says Stockholmsmässan’s CEO Patric Sjöberg.

2010 was a good year for exhibitions too, and by autumn we were seeing clear signs that the economy is once again on the up. Our program featured both large international exhibitions such as Nordbygg, Stockholm Furniture Fair and GastroNord/Vinordic and popular public events like Allt för sjön, Hem & Villa and the new Spara & Placera. A total of just over 70 exhibitions were held during the year, around half being the company’s own events and half exhibitions run by external organizers hiring Stockholmsmässan’s premises.

“One clear trend is that the international element is increasing all the time. Take, for example, Stockholm Furniture Fair, which has consolidated its position as the most attractive furniture fair in the whole of northern Europe. Over the past decade the turnover has increased by around half, while the proportion of international exhibitors has gone from barely 30 percent to over 40 percent. Another trend is that the exhibitions are expanding beyond the venue and out into the city, with theme weeks and various types of related events, such as Stockholm Design Week and Gastronomic Week.”

The business area Event Services, i.e. associated services for exhibitors and meeting organizers, experienced good growth and broke the 200-million mark for the first time. The areas that showed greatest expansion were hiring of stand equipment and AV technology and design of meeting environments.

The regional financial contribution from Stockholmsmässan’s activities was over SEK 4 billion for the first time.

“Those who come to our events generate a huge amount of income for the visitor industry in the form of hotel overnights, restaurant visits, shopping and transport. In 2010, we welcomed 360,000 congress delegates, 960,000 exhibition attendees and almost 11,000 exhibitors, who spent a total of SEK 4.1 billion during their visit to Stockholm. This equates to almost 3,500 jobs; in other words, new jobs that come about as a direct result of Stockholmsmässan’s activities,” says Patric Sjöberg.
