Scented Candle Refill Wins Formex Sustainability Award

The first recipient of the new Formex Sustainability Award has been announced. Remoair won the award for its innovative and resource-efficient scented candle refill. Many interesting entries were submitted last fall for the first ever Formex Sustainability Award. The jury shortlisted a total of nine entries, all of which are represented in a mini exhibition at Formex. The winner was Swedish company Remoair with its clever and well-thought-out scented candle refills.

The jury’s citation:

With a simple and smart product, the scented candle market has finally been given a refill solution that works. This is an attractive way to encourage reuse and create atmosphere in our homes without the reek of the fossil-fuel industry, animal by-products or rainforest deforestation.

The winner of the Formex Sustainability Award 2023 is Remoair!
Martin Jirveus, founder of Remoair, accepted the award—a unique glass figurine designed by Marie-Louise Hellgren—at the Formex press breakfast.

– Winning this award is confirmation that the direction I chose for the company when we started is the right way to go, so I feel extremely honored. I’m so happy! The award also sets the bar going forward, and I’ll continue to ensure that more people are refilling instead of buying new products,” says Martin Jirveus.

Remoair’s refill product came about due to a production mistake, when a label was being attached to a glass container and the candle fell out of the container. This sparked the concept of refills, which was then developed further.

– I soon realized that a cast candle refill would only help our own customers, as it requires a candle holder of exactly the right size. In addition, a lot of packaging material would be required to protect the refill during transportation. That’s why it became a refill bag, so that the candle refill can be used in any holder of roughly the right size,” explains Martin Jirveus.

Remoair’s candle refill consists of rapeseed/coconut wax in a bag of 100% recycled paper with a biodegradable bioplastic liner. The customer melts the wax in a water bath and pours it into any holder.

– It feels fantastic that Formex’s newly established award is on track, that our first winner has been selected and is receiving the attention and confirmation they deserve, and thus are incentivized to continue developing in a sustainable direction. This is something that may also inspire others going forward,” says Formex Event Manager Sonja Björk Ebert.

The Formex Sustainability Award has been established to highlight good examples in the industry and promote sustainable development. The award will be presented annually at the spring Formex fair.

The jury consists of designers Marie-Louise Hellgren and Emma Olbers, Björn Florman from the Materials Library, journalist and co-founder of the Climate Club Maria Soxbo, and Formex project manager Kajsa Falck Torlegård.
