Press release -
They want to make it less lonely at the top
Femmegineering is the Danir Group's next year's initiative for a better tomorrow. They want to highlight the problem that there are too few girls who are applying for engineering programs at a technical college or university. The number rises a little each year, but the process is moving slowly. At the same time, the tech industry is screaming for people and needs access to the entire population.
Femmegineering wants to help girls who study at tech programs to feel a greater sense of belonging, become more positive about their education and in the long run inspire more girls to choose a tech career. If younger girls hear more positive things about these educations, we hope and believe that more of them will want to apply to tech colleges and universities. This would balance the situation and at the same time increase the number and availability of university and college-educated engineers.
If an engineering career is to become a natural choice for girls, female role models in the tech industry need to be highlighted and given the opportunity to share their experiences with the girls who want to follow in their footsteps.
During the year, Femmegineering will also highlight the girls who study at tech programs and give them a chance to share their experiences and what has worked for them, what has helped them feel more at home in their education.
To gather and draw attention to these few but inspiring women in the tech world, Femmegineering will during the year collect stories from girls and women who are either studying or already working as an engineer. They want to hear more about their thoughts, their experiences and dreams about the future. Femmegineering would like to have their thoughts on why there are so few girls in tech, and most importantly, if they have any tips or suggestions for improvement.
Femmegineering wants to be the link, the community and the network where these girls can find support and feel that even though they are few, they are not alone.
International Expect a Better Tomorrow Day
Sigma and Danir launched the "International Expect a Better Tomorrow Day" on New Year's Eve 2017. There were already days for most other things, so why not have a theme day for a better tomorrow? By launching “Expect a Better Tomorrow Day”, Sigma and Danir wanted to contribute to a more sustainable, equal and fair society. Their first project, Segerpotten, brought the financial situation of women's football to the attention of the public. During 2019, the Funkisfonden has highlighted the importance and benefit of physical activity for people with intellectual disabilities. 2020 Haveriet has been their initiative to spread a deepened knowledge of the sea, how critical the situation is and how crucially important a healthy sea is to us humans.
“We are in need of more engineers and we need to get more women to choose an engineering career, because our industry, like everything else, profit from becoming more equal," says Johan Glennmo, CEO Danir.
“Of those who graduate from engineering programs each year, only 10% are girls. A disappointing figure but a figure that makes these girls rare gems in an industry where companies go to any length to get them to join them. Because they know that they will contribute with qualities and viewpoints that they lack or have too little of,” says Johan Glennmo, CEO Danir.
“I chose to study Engineering physics since I considered it to be wide enough to allow me to make more informed career choices along the way. And there are a lot more jobs than you think where you need an engineering degree," says Bethlehem Araya, Line manager at Sigma Connectivity.
“As an Opto-electronics engineer, my work has always meant being at the forefront of technology, it’s a constant challenge and most importantly it’s fun and inspiring," says Bethlehem Araya, Line manager at Sigma Connectivity.
“My education didn’t only give me the academics, it has equipped me with endurance and problem-solving capabilities that I use in many situations in life," says Bethlehem Araya, Line manager at Sigma Connectivity.
