Unveiling Olympus PEN

Aug 4 was an important day for avid photographers in Thailand as the latest three models of the Olympus PEN series were presented. The big event was held at VIE Hotel, Bangkok, with guests of honour Mr Yasuo Asakura and MR Kazutaka Fukuda from Olympus Imaging.

The first camera to enter the Thai market was PEN E-P3, available since the third week of August. PEN E-P3 is the fifth version of the PEN Micro Four Thirds Line. Keeping the original PEN’s retro-style body, it’s the fastest autofocus of any interchangeable lens camera. Furthermore, it is the smallest and lightest PEN to date and comes in six stylish colours.

E-PL3 was launched in September. This model is a more compact, lightweight and modern looking mid-range spin-off of the PEN E-P3. Combining both the attributes of high performance and compact ease of use, it boasts a 3-inch LCD and is designed to serve as the centrepiece of Olympus’ popular PEN series.

Last but not least there is Olympus E-PM1, which will be available from October onwards. This new model of the PEN series is targeted at the fashion sensitive younger generation and brings the concepts of simplicity and stylishness to SLR photography. Weighing just 401 grams including camera body, standard zoom, lens, flash, memory card and rechargeable battery, the Olympus E-PM1 is currently the world’s lightest camera.

The PEN E-P3, PEN E-PL3 and PEN E-PM1 are all 12.3-megapixel models with High Speed Live MOS sensors, TruePic VI image processors, and a top ISO of 12,800. 1080i HD video mode comes as standard, as does a selection of art filters.
