When shopping for fabrics you are most likely to come across the terms Wyzenbeek Vs Martindale Fabric Abrasion Tests. These tests are a guide to measure the durability of the fabrics and its resistance to wear and tear. They help justify whether the fabric is suitable for high traffic areas and if it is preferable for a place with not much people traffic.

Despite testing for a common product, there are several differences between the two. Let’s start with the primary difference. Wyzenbeek testing is preferred in the United States while Martindale testing is the preferred testing method in the United Kingdom.

In the Wyzenbeek abrasion test, a fabric sample is cut into two pieces and each is pulled tight in a frame where it is stationary. A piece of cotton duck fabric is used as the abradant and is rubbed back and forth over the fabric. This is known as the “double rub. “The abrasion rating is determined by the number of double rubs made before the two yarn breaks.

In the Martindale abrasion test, the fabric is rubbed in a number eight pattern measured in a cycle. The number of cycles that the fabric can endure before fabric shows visible change in appearance determines the abrasion rating.
