Maison & Objet 2014 Arrives in Asia

For the first time ever, Maison & Objet, French based international trade fair set foot in Asia and Singapore being its very first destination. The furniture and lifestyle exhibition was filled with over the top lifestyle accessories ranging from spectacular lights to tableware and accessories fit for royalty.

Stepping into the Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre, one can’t help but notice beautifully set up booths, each with personalized themes captivating visitors. 2 themes struck a chord. For one, many booths adopted a Contemporary Chic look. Silvers, metals and minimalistic designs were seen at booths showcasing Lights and decorative accessories. A Modern Heritage look was prominent in furniture, fabrics and tableware booths. Who knew simple household items could transform into statement pieces when sprinkled with a twist in design and colours.

Besides booth hoping visitors were treated to talks by the whos who of the design and decor industry. Talks by Tom Dixon and Maison & Objet Asia’s designer of the year 2014, Kenneth Cobonpur spoke on selling design online and trend spotting.

An interesting discussion brewed between Tony Chisholm ,General Manager of the upcoming boutique hotel Sofitel So Singapore and Isabelle Miaja – Managing director & Interior Architect of Miaja Design Group and designer of Sofitel So Singapore.

The two discussed the creation and blending of luxurious and modern design to a heritage building, the challenges faced with bringing a unique experience to each So Hotel yet remaining true to the brand. Tony ended off the session with a tip that many designers and design enthusiast alike may find relevant. He mentions that being too creative can sometimes be a hindrance and some form of restraint is necessary to make sure the primary use of the product is not lost.

Robinson CEO and Managing Director Franz Kraatz took the stage to walk through the décor and design idea behind the new Robinsons at Orchard Road. When we walk into a department store, we rarely notice the attention that goes into planning each aspect.

Franz brought to attention unique retail design concepts of having see through shelves to elongate space, and using decorative designs on the floor to guide users instead of the usual signboard. Robinsons at Orchard has brought new ideas to add a modern touch to the 100 year old franchise. With an in store restaurant, a bank (even open on the weekends) and even a hair dressers.

Maison & Objet Asia 2014 in its 6000 sq m brought to Singapore a fresh perspective in Luxury, Design and Interior Decoration.
