Växjö Energi demonstrates carbon capture technology with Sumitomo SHI FW

Carbon Capture technology provider Sumitomo SHI FW (SFW) and the Swedish energy company Växjö Energi AB are collaborating on a testing campaign this summer to optimize carbon capture technology based on the hot potassium carbonate (HPC) process.

Växjö Energi and SFW have signed an agreement under which SFW will provide a mobile carbon capture demonstration facility and Växjö Energi will host the corresponding operation activities at their Sandvik biomass plant in Växjö, Sweden.

The campaign aims to demonstrate the full carbon capture solution, including CO2 capturing and liquefaction. The HPC process has a CO2 capture rate exceeding 90% and produces high-purity (<99%) CO2.The electricity-powered technology also produces low-temperature heat, contributing to sustainable heat production and low energy penalty.

-With all our plants already turned fossil free since years, this provides a solid platform for realizing negative emissions through carbon capture of biogenic CO2. The demonstration will provide valuable insights how to optimize the technical solution to fit our existing combined heat and power plant in order to even further lower climate impact, says Erik Tellgren, CEO Växjö Energi.

-We are excited to demonstrate the HPC solution with a sustainable energy supplier like Växjö Energi, who provides us with a real-world scenario for optimization. Via the campaign, Växjö Energi can operate our solution with their specific flue gas conditions. This is an excellent example of how we can work together within the industry to power decarbonization, says Frank Ligthart, VP Circular Carbon SFW.

The campaign’s planned schedule includes installing the mobile unit at the Växjö site during May–June 2024, with operations commencing by the end of June. Operation with the demonstration unit continues until the end of September.
