Encounter between life and death in new exhibition at the Museum of World Culture, Gothenburg

In Mexico, it is said, the past never dies. Traditions have been mixing and reshaping here for thousands of years. On Saturday 12 February, the Museum of World Culture in Gothenburg opens the exhibition ¡Viva México! which aims to broaden the picture of Mexico's diverse origins and traditions. It will be a colorful encounter between life and death in an exhibition that includes both struggle and courage, skulls and flowers.

Mexico's history is one of change and resilience. It is about worlds that are created and perish, great cultures that thrive, an area that is conquered, a country that becomes independent. Stories of life and death follow us through the exhibition, capturing some moments in Mexico's history. This history is full of conflict and tragedy but also resilience and humor.

The close relationship between life and death is a central theme of Mexican cultural heritage. For several years, the celebration of Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) has been organised at the Museum of World Culture in conjunction with the Mexican Association in Gothenburg, and visitors of all ages have shown great interest in these issues.

- In Mexico there is a different approach to death compared to the Nordic tradition, says exhibition producer Tina Landgren. At a time when many around the world have had to face the difficult, the Museum of World Culture wants to highlight more ways of mourning and thinking about death.

The exhibition is aimed at several generations and offers children a special trail to follow - through the paw prints of the mythical nude dog Xolo. With a welcoming approach and never-before-exhibited objects from its collections, the Museum of World Culture hopes to create encounters between people of different ages and experiences. Texts are available in Swedish, Spanish, and English.

¡Viva México! will be developed throughout the year with artist collaborations, in-depth seminars and school programs.

The exhibition opens on Saturday 12 February 2022 and will be on display at the Museum of World Culture, Korsvägen, Gothenburg until 8 January 2023.

Our vision is a bigger, more humane and more inclusive world.

The National Museums of World Culture is a government agency under the Swedish Ministry of Culture. The ordinance tasks the National Museums of World Culture with showcasing and bringing to life the cultures of the world, particularly those originating outside of Sweden.

The agency is to document and illuminate the conditions and forms of expressions of other cultures as well as interaction between cultures and cultural variation—historical and modern, national and international. Another task is to promote interdisciplinary knowledge enhancement and various forms of public activities.

Its operations are carried out in Sweden's two largest cities: in Stockholm at The Museum of Ethnography (Etnografiska museet), The Museum of Mediterranean and Near Eastern Antiquities (Medelhavsmuseet) and The Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities (Östasiatiska museet), and in Gothenburg at The Museum of World Culture (Världskulturmuseet).

As a national museum organization, our mission includes national and international outreach, in particular in relation to the origins of our collections.
