Östermalmshallen Padel wins two Architizer A+Awards

The temporary market hall at Östermalmstorg in Stockholm was dismantled and reassembled in 2022 as a padel hall in Mölnlycke. With competition entries from 80 countries, it is now confirmed that the Tengbom reuse project has been selected as jury winner for two categories at the Architizer A+Awards.

When the renovation of Östermalmshallen in Stockholm was completed in 2022, the temporary hall was dismantled and transported to Mölnlycke to be reborn as a padel hall. Östermalmshallen Padel is now a jury winner in the Architizer A+Awards in two categories: Sustainable Adaptive Reuse or Renovation Project and Gyms and Recreation Centers.

— We are immensely proud that Östermalmshallen Padel has been recognized by Architizer now that the building has been given new life in a different location, says Mark Humphreys, Practice Director at Tengbom in Stockholm, who is the Lead architect for the project. This is a major reuse project, perhaps one of the largest in Sweden. The project demonstrates that good architecture is a prerequisite for long-term sustainability.

The Tengbom-designed hall has previously won the Architizer A+ Award, the Design S architecture award, and the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce City Environment Award. The structure of the building is a prefabricated timber construction, the lower part of the facade is clad with vertical pine slats, and the upper part is made of polycarbonate panels that allow light to enter. The facade opens up with glass sections in the restaurant corner, providing views both into the hall and over the nearby lake. As part of the adaptation from market hall to padel hall, the internal pillars and facade were extended so that the roof is now two meters higher than when the hall stood at Östermalmstorg. The building was also adapted to the slope of the ground at the new site, and the roof drainage was expanded, as there is more rain in Mölnlycke than in Stockholm. The changes are visible inside and tell the story of the building's history.

— The building has been a popular success from the start, and our client Wallenstam has been keen to preserve and enhance the fine qualities in adapting the building to its new purpose and location, says Mark Humphreys. The project also shows how advantageous prefabricated timber construction can be as a building material. It made it easy to adapt the building to its new function, even though we did not plan for this type of reuse from the project’s outset. The modular construction made it easy to dismantle and move the building. We strongly believe in this way of reusing buildings.
