The Stockholm Visionary Award 2023 is awarded to the director Catherine Breillat

The Stockholm International Film Festival 2023 presents the Stockholm Visionary Award to the french director Catherine Breillat.

Catherine Breillat has been hailed by both critics and cinema-goers for her unwavering commitment to women and her fight against censorship laws. She is now being honored with the world's heaviest film award in the form of the 7.3 kg heavy Bronze Horse.

Motivation:

The Stockholm Visionary Award 2023 is presented to one of our time's most daring visionaries. Her cinematic explorations of power dynamics have shed light on the darkest corners of passion and desire. Her films encourage the audience to reconsider their own beliefs and prejudices. This year's recipient is a director who has never accepted taboos or the idea that certain subjects are not suitable for the silver screen. Women's bodies and sexual awakening are a recurring theme. Her stripped-down aesthetics and raw expression have served as inspiration for an entire generation of female filmmakers, making her a true pioneer with a consistently challenging feminist perspective. We are proud to present the Stockholm Visionary Award 2023 to Catherine Breillat.

Breillat's "A Summer" is a remake of the Danish erotic thriller "Queen of Hearts" from 2019. The film depicts a relationship between an older woman and her much younger stepson, where Breillat has chosen to shift the power dynamic, giving the stepson greater agency, promising new and interesting perspectives.

In conjunction with the screening of the film "A Summer" an exclusive Face2Face event with director Catherine Breillat will be held.

Catherine Breillat

The French filmmaker, novelist, and film professor began her career as a writer and actress. Her film "A Real Young Girl" (1976) marked her directorial debut, and she has since established herself as a leading director in French cinema. Most of Breillat's films revolve around women's sexual awakening and societal taboos as "Romance" (1999), "Fat Girl" (2001) and "Anatomy of Hell" (2004)

The Stockholm Visionary Award was established in 2004, and the film prize, the Bronze Horse, weighs 7.3 kilograms, making it the heaviest film award in the world. Previous winners include, among others, Sam Mendes (2022), Joachim Trier (2021), Matteo Garrone (2020), Céline Sciamma (2019), Asghar Farhadi (2018), Pablo Larraín (2017), Francois Ozon (2016), Yorgos Lanthimos (2015), Roy Andersson (2014), Peter Greenaway (2013), Jacques Audiard (2012), Alejandro González Iñárritu (2011), Gus Van Sant (2010), Luc Besson (2009), Wong Kar-Wai (2008), Wes Anderson (2007), Darren Aronofsky (2006), Terry Gilliam (2005), and Todd Solondz (2004).
