The Lilian Karina Research Grant in Dance and Politics 2013 is awarded to Kate Elswit
Kate Elswit
Kate Elswit holds a Lectureship in Theatre and Performance Studies at the University of Bristol. Previously, she was at Stanford University as a postdoctoral fellow at the Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship of Scholars in the Humanities, and she has also taught at CalArts, Laban, and the
University of Cambridge, where she received her PhD. She was awarded the Gertrude Lippincott Award from the Society of Dance History Scholars for her 2009 article "Berlin ... Your Dance Partner is Death" in TDR: The Drama Review, and the Biennial Sally Banes Publication Prize from the American Society for Theatre Research for her 2008 Modern Drama article "The Some of the Parts: Prosthesis and Function in Bertolt Brecht, Oskar Schlemmer, and Kurt Jooss." Her other essays appear in Theatre Journal, Art Journal, Performance Research, TDR, and in the edited collection New German Dance Studies. Her book, Watching Weimar Dance, is forthcoming in 2014 from Oxford University Press in the series Oxford Studies in Dance Theory. She also works as a choreographer, curator, and dramaturg.
Motivation:
Dance scholar, choreographer, curator and dramaturg Kate Elswit is awarded the Lilian Karina Research Grant in Dance and Politics 2013, for a research project that entails both a scholarly re-thinking of Kurt Jooss’ place in German dance history, and an artistic collaboration that re-invents and problematizes the inheritance of his last choreography Dixit Dominus. Thus, her research fits well into Lilian Karina’s explicit aim to further the knowledge of the art of dance and how it was influenced by
20th century politics.
The grant, 70.000 SEK, will be presented to the awardee November 17th, 2013
