How do you execute your strategy in order to win the game?

"Less than 10% of strategies effectively formulated worldwide are also effectively executed" - The Economist.

Now, that needs a change of behaviour within organizations!

As always it starts from the Top management level, but you also need a pull -oriented organization. After a well formulated and approved strategy, you can take it further in your organization in two ways.

The Old school or The New school!

1. The Old school;

A) The Strategy does not include the “HOW” on an operational level and the KPI’s are not understandable or relatable to the individual who needs to be part of the behavioural change in order to successfully execute the strategies.

B) The Execution starts with a Kick-Off and workshops, top-down, different teams, motivating videos are used, ...but since almost all work is done outside the daily operational work, the individual will not be able to get a deeper understanding of how the strategies can be translated into the “HOW” on the daily operational level. Thereby the strategies are doomed to fail.

After couple off weeks the staff is back in the whirlwind!

C) KPI’s and Measurement is done only on a higher level (wherefore execution failure is a fact to be late in the realization) - Behavioural change and the HOW is not measured.

Only approximately 20 % of the strategy executions are successful.

2. The New school;

A) The Strategy does also include the “HOW” and the KPI’s are understandable and relatable to the individual who is a vital part of the change and the improvement process.

B) The Wildly Important Goals (WIG´s) are identified and prioritized.

C) The Execution starts with a Kick-Off and workshops, top-down, different WIG teams, motivating videos are used, ...but in this option all strategy execution improvement work is done integrated with the daily operational work. Each individual is now trained in the necessary “Steps” needed for behavioural change and improved WIG’s.

This keeps the team highly motivated and accountable for the execution of the strategy!

D) KPI’s and Measurement is done also on the “Steps” and on the Behavioural change, connected to the overlaying financial WIGs. To enable a faster strategic execution - KPI’s and measurement is done weekly on all levels, not just on a higher strategic level.

Approximately 80 % of the strategy executions are successful and on time!

If everything remains as before (practically and in reality) the company will most likely not reach the financial goals according to the strategy, especially if the HOW and measurable KPI’s (integrated with the daily work) not is added. Everyone in the Organization has to be part of the behavioural change and improvement process on a daily basis and it must be measured from day one.
