OPENART 2024 opens for applications on January 31

OpenArt is a biennial for contemporary art in the public space taking place in Örebro, Sweden. During the period from January 31 to February 28, professional artists from all over the world can apply to participate in the 2024 exhibition.

Almost six months have passed since the last exhibition closed for the summer and now it is time to open the doors for the 2024 exhibition. On January 31 the application form where professional artists can apply to participate opens. OpenArt is this year looking for bold ideas with a sustainable production chain that broadens the perspective of contemporary art.

- It is important to have an overall plan of the material that is used both in production and after the exhibition. As most artworks exhibited at OpenArt are of a temporary nature, we strive to use materials carefully and in a sustainable manner during production - says exhibition producer Sofia Gustafsson, project manager for Open Call

OpenArt is an outdoor exhibition, which is promoted in this year's selection of artworks. OpenArt is looking for artwork to be placed outdoors in the public space of Örebro and the artist must have a plan for that in their application. Artworks in the exhibition will in most cases be available to the audience both day and night. If the application concerns fragile artwork, the artist needs to describe how it can be shown in the best way.

- From experience, we know that there are many innovative solutions for displaying more fragile artworks outdoors, for example in a glazed cube or displayed with a distance from the audience. Here, we welcome the applicant to come up with their own ideas for showing their artworks if it cannot be available outdoors at all hours - says Sofia Gustafsson

How does the application and selection work?

The Open Call application can be accessed via Konstpool's website www.konstpool.se from January 31. A direct link will be presented on OpenArt's website where applicants can find more information about the process: www.openart.se/opencall.

The artist must first open an account on the konstpool website and read the information carefully to ensure that the application is appropriate for the exhibition before starting the application process.

The application form consists of several questions and information that needs to be filled in before the form can be submitted. It is possible to apply with both existing artworks for loan and ideas for new artworks to produce. Professional artists can apply with a total of two artworks in the system and the expectation is that selected artists will participate with more than one artwork.

After the Open Call has closed, the applications are assessed by invited jury groups that consider not only the quality of the artworks, but also placement as well as the diversity and representation of artists. Based on the jury groups' recommendations, OpenArt starts dialogue with the artists and makes the final decision about the selection later in the spring.
