Experimental design by guest designer David Trubridge - seating furniture to drift away on

Waka is designed by David Trubridge who, in his second collaboration with Offecct, has created an inviting, open piece of seating furniture. It is a place for meetings or rest where we can let our minds drift away for a moment.

Waka looks like it has approached the floor and stopped in a serene smile. The form triggers curiosity but doesn’t immediately signal how it should be used. With an inviting structure, an open seating is instead offered which is the result of an advanced design which New Zealand designer David Trubridge has refined over different stages of his career.

“The inspiration for this furniture goes all the way back to the ’70s when I studied to become a naval architect. This furniture is derived from the lines in a boat construction and resembles something that floats, something dreamy that you can drift away on,” says David Trubridge.

The body of Waka is barely three metres long with a broad centre and narrow ends, which gives it character and space enough for several people to use at the same time. An upholstered surface with a characteristic quilt pattern covers the structure of the furniture.
Waka is therefore just as easily arranged in an open landscape in a public environment as it is placed in a lobby or reception area as a beautiful centrepiece.

“This is a play between industrial construction and handicraft, which means that it lies at the core of what Offecct is known for: furniture that is as beautiful as it is functional,” says Anders Englund, Design Manager at Offecct.

Bio David Trubridge

David Trubridge has built his studio and its operation on a profound environmentally-conscious philosophy, which informs all aspects of the studio’s design and production. A true lover of nature and the outdoors, concern for the environment has always come before profit for David Trubridge. This ethos is demonstrated in the studio’s dedication to sourcing environmentally sustainable materials. David Trubridge graduated from Newcastle University in England in 1972 with a degree in Naval architecture. Working briefly as a forester, David Trubridge taught himself to make furniture. He sailed around the world with his family before settling in New Zealand in 1985. His fortunes changed in 2001 when his Body Raft was taken to Milan and launched into production by Cappellini. This transformed a small-scale operation into a design studio with a strong presence in the global lighting and furniture markets.

Offecct Lab

Waku is presented in Offecct Lab. Offecct Lab is a department within Offecct where new techniques, materials and forms are tried and tested in order to move the furniture industry forward. It is a part of Lifecircle, Offecct’s strategic work with sustainable design. This is the second collaboration between Offecct and David Trubridge after the acoustic room divider Membrane, which was launched in 2013.

Good design inspire and encourage creativity. This is sometimes felt rather than seen, like through a comfortable position in a furniture, or in a perfect acoustic environment.

Offecct started with a vision to create the meeting places of the future, where beauty and innovation go hand in hand with functionality. While our origin is Swedish, the philosophy has always been borderless and characterised by an international perspective on Scandinavian design. This is why we collaborate with the world’s most creative architects and designers. Together we affect spaces. We explore ideas that are innovative and push concepts of work – balancing the radical and the functional.
Spaces in which you work and socialise flow between the analog and digital realms. This experience should be as easy and frictionless as possible. We develop our collection with this in mind. And to make sure that our clients get the assistance they need to complete their vision, we are committed to find solutions. A free service is activated once you make a purchase from us. It means that we are there for you to help develop and execute proposals based on our extensive collection, in a knowledgeable and professional way.
