Allt började på universitet i Lund. Tre studenter ville använda sina exjobb för att undersöka vad renlav skulle kunna användas till. Materialets struktur innebar god bullerdämpande förmåga, samtidigt som lavens förmåga att binda och avge fukt gjorde den till ett vackert och underhållsfritt inredningselement.
