Mondelēz International in the Nordics switch to HVO fuel – estimating an 88 per cent reduction of CO2 emissions annually

As part of Mondelēz Internationals commitment to a 2050 net zero emissions target, the company is replacing regular diesel with HVO biodiesel on transportation in Sweden, Finland and Denmark. The use of HVO fuel, which is a renewable diesel alternative completely based on food waste, is estimated to reduce 2100 metric tons of CO2 annually - a reduction of 88 per cent.

Since 1 May 2021, Mondelēz International have used HVO biodiesel on selected routes to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions (CO2) of the company's own transportation from factory to warehouse. The company works actively to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the business and has worked closely with logistics company Frode Laursen to further reduce CO2 emissions in their transportation. As of 1 November 2021, the company is using HVO fuel for all transportation with Frode Laursen.

- As part of our work to further reduce emissions in our operations, we are working with the logistics company Frode Laursen and switching to HVO diesel in all transportation they do for us. This change is needed for us to reduce our climate footprint and thus contribute to slowing down global warming. We see this as an important milestone in our work to create a sustainable future and hope that more people do as we do, says Martina Flemström MD at Mondelēz International in Sweden and Finland.

HVO fuel is one of the cleanest fuels on the market. It is a second-generation, synthetic and advanced renewable diesel alternative that eliminates up to 88% of net CO2 and significantly reduces nitrogen oxide (NO), nitrogen di-oxid (NOx), particulate matter (PM) and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions.

- As part of our roadmap towards becoming fossil-free and reducing our emissions, we have worked out a solution where we quickly reduce our CO2 footprint for transportation. This is done by switching fuel to the second generation of HVO. In this way, we are taking a big step towards our long-term ambition to use fossil-free transportation, says Kenneth Bjureström Logistics Operations Manager in the Nordics.

- We will continue to streamline our transportation by evaluating our internal logistics network, but also to ensure the maximum utilization rate of our contacted transportation capacity, says Kenneth Bjureström.
