The Barrique Chair

Recycling, design and wine come together in these innovative products created by Magnus Mewes. At his girlfriend's winery, barrique barrels are used for about 4 years for red wines to age in. After that period of time, tannins and other aromas stop being released by the oak, so typically, the barriques would then be disposed of.

Not anymore. Today, the designer forms beautiful, plain but rustique looking chairs - completely out of barrique wood. No new material is added. The staves of the barrel, once formed into curves by a cooper, make for comfortable sitting. The panels that made the front and back of the barrel, now turn into the frame of the chair. The bung hole is found in the back rest of the chair. I really like the many different shades of red the wines have left in the oak! We are considering...
