This week the Swedish Record Label Ikaros Records release the album “Ikaros Rep”. The album constitutes seven covers of swedish songs that have been reinterpreted by new music producers that don’t belong to the majority as for today. The purpose of the project is to highlight and encourage a wider representation among music producers and the industry as a whole.

The music producers involved in this project span from established and well-known Swedish producers such as Katharina Nuttall. To those regarded as future talents such as Ji Nilsson, Ilon Vejde and Adele Kosman. Among the artists performing the productions, names such as Julia Spada and Asha Ali are found.

In addition to the album, Ikaros has produced a short film where every producer is given the chance to talk about the own creative process. Main purpose being to give the viewer and listener a deeper understading of the process and view of the personal reflections from persons “behind the music”.

- We were asked about music producers that don’t identify themselves as men, and we could not name any. We are well aware of that they exist, however, apparently not in an equally visible manner as for instance Max Martin. We thought that it probably has alot to do with own associations and experiences of who is percieved as a music producers today. We wanted to challenge and widen the association around who is regarded as a music producer and Ikaros Rep is the result, said Mariah Strengnell, Label Manager at Ikaros Records.

An extension of the project is an collaboration with the Art Production Agency Young Art, where seven female artists have made visual interpretations of the cover. The seven art pieces are used as artwork for the album and is also exhibited on NAU Gallery i Stockholm.

- For Young Art it has always been important to highlight female artists in a male-dominated art world, and the music industry is no exception. To do a cross-over interpretation as this has been incredibly exciting and has given us new perspectives on how we produce exhibitions together with other creators”, said Caroline Leuhusen, Digital Media Manager at Young Art.
