Anton Corbijn and GöteborgsOperans Danskompani in a unique collaboration – photo exhibition opening 3 November

Anton Corbijn is one of the most respected names in photography, having taken iconic portraits of some of the greatest artists of our time. GöteborgsOperans Danskompani is a driving force in the world of contemporary dance. This spring they met for some days while the company was on tour in London. The result, the exhibition Stillness thru movement, opens on 3 November at the Göteborg Opera.

For almost half a century, Dutch photographer and director Anton Corbijn has been praised for his ability to capture the soul and charisma of his subjects through the lens: Depeche Mode, PJ Harvey, Nick Cave, Rolling Stones, U2, Clint Eastwood, Ai Weiwei, Nelson Mandela, Miles Davis, Joni Mitchell…

GöteborgsOperans Danskompani are constantly developing demanding new creations with the world’s leading choreographers, and perform at the world's top dance venues. After collaborations with renowned artists in other fields: Thom Yorke, Paul Thomas Anderson, Es Devlin, Maria Grazia Chiuri (Dior), Antony Gormley and Ane Brun – a new name is now added to the list.

The photo exhibition Stillness thru movement is Anton Corbijn’s personal documentation of a tour to London in May 2023, where GöteborgsOperans Danskompani performed Skid by Damien Jalet and SAABA by Sharon Eyal at Sadler’s Wells in London. The 21 images show the iconic photographer’s perspective on the dancers, the company, and the art form.

Anton Corbijn says:

“I was blown away by the performances and thoroughly enjoyed the immersive experience that the company allowed me to have over 3 days in London in May this year. What a great group of people and what a wonderful canvas for a photographer. THANK YOU!”

Katrín Hall, Artistic Director of GöteborgsOperans Danskompani:

“It has been a fantastic journey to experience Anton Corbijn’s fresh perspective on the world that we live and work in every day. Apart from being a well-documented visual genius Anton is also a gentleman and a very inspirational individual to be around – curious, smart, funny and warm. He is always trying to move forward and explore new worlds creatively, just like we do as a company. We are incredibly grateful for this stimulating collaboration and hope that everybody who sees the images also will enjoy the result.”

The photo exhibition will be shown at the Göteborg Opera from 3 November until 12 December. Free admission. The project has been made possible thanks to support from Göteborg & Co, the official destination management organisation of the City of Gothenburg and the metropolitan area.
