Malmö Breaking Signature -Breaking Festival in Scandinavia

From the 20th to 23rd of July 2023, in two of Malmö’s unavoidable cultural locations: Fryshuset and Sofielunds Folkets Hus, will be held the Malmö Breaking Signature (MBS), a Breaking festival which brings together leaders and organizations from the worldwide Hip-Hop and Urban Dance community. The two founders; Fryshuset and Breaking Association Malmö want to contribute to the democratization of the Breaking and its professionalization in Sweden but also in the whole world.

A CHEERFUL AND SENSATIONAL PROGRAMMING
MBS will feature hundreds of dancers and enthusiasts within the framework of numerous performances and activities celebrating Hip-Hop culture. Renowned artists will make the moment unforgettable, such as Dirty Jens (Sweden), King Skraam (Sweden), Hurricane (France), Lack of Crowns (Scandinavia), Familia Loca (Denmark), Vinotinto (Venezuela), Too much Underground (Turkey) or Daniel Sonic Rojas (Colombia).

Each day of the festival will have its own theme:
Day 1: SBL Challenge: battles, seminar, DJ and Cypher in collaboration with Swedish Break League, in Fryshuset.

Day 2: Circle of Jam: live music, Jam, BeatBox, Breaking and Cypher in collaboration with Freestyle Phanatix, in Fryshuset.

Day3: BAM Rock: battles, fleamarket, Jam and Cypher in collaboration with Breaking Association Malmö, in Sofielunds Folkets Hus.

Day 4: Open Camp: workshops and speech in collaboration with Dance Sport Federation, in Fryshuset.

While these happenings will take place, the outdoor area of Fryshuset will host a unique outdoor location for the entire event with many booths, such as clothing brands, a vinyl store, thrift stores, a stamp your own t-shirt workshop and an open graffiti wall.

PEACE, LOVE UNITY AND HAVING FUN!
Malmö breaking festival wants to pass on the historical and founding values of breaking: Peace, Love Unity and Having Fun! The core values of Hip-Hop. As a festival taking place in a youth center, MBS also wants to highlight Breaking as a youth culture, as it has a strong potential to make young people believe in themselves and develop an identity of their own. Furthermore, MBS is free and accessible to all, to ensure equity and democratization of Hip-Hop culture.

A FESTIVAL TO MAKE HISTORY
Breaking is at a historical turning point with an international, professional and economic structuring. The discipline has been constantly evolving since the 1970s, especially in recent years when it has reached new heights by being included in the Paris 2024 Olympics. With its large and committed community, breaking has the potential to become a strong market in the sport field. However, the danger is that it continues to be monopolized by large industries and diverted from its truth. That’s why we need to take the opportunity to create such an event in Scandinavia led by the breaking scene itself.

About us
Fryshuset and Breaking Association Malmö (BAM) have decided to join forces to act for youth in Malmö, in the fields
of culture and sports.

BAM was co-founded by Arturo Castillo, a Bboy himself, alongside with Jonas Jons and Rickard Gilengren. Born in Venezuela, Arturo started Breaking 17 years ago and with time reached a high level, participating in worldwide competitions. In 2019, he created the non-profit association “Back to the Origin” to promote Hip-Hop in Sweden. Then, in 2019, he established the Breaking Association Malmö to promote cultural and urban art forms. The next step for him is the 2024 Olympics, for which he has been nominated.

Fryshuset is a youth center for education, social projects and passionate interests that was initially dominated by basketball and rock music. It quickly became a platform for young Hip-Hop enthusiasts, who found the space and encouragement to develop their music and culture. Fryshuset makes it possible for young people to change the world through their passions.
