Färgfabriken focuses on architecture as art and social force

Architectures – Eight Contemporary Studies
31 August–24 November
Group exhibition, Main hall
Curator and exhibition architect: Karolina Keyzer

This autumn, Färgfabriken takes a deeper look at architecture in an exhibition curated by the architect Karolina Keyzer, former acting director of Färgfabriken. Architectures – Eight Contemporary Studies offers visitors new perspectives on architecture. The focus is on architecture as an art form in its own right, and its capacity to fulfill basic human needs.

In this exhibition, we aim to go back to the core of architecture and its potential to improve people’s lives and propose solutions to contemporary challenges, says Karolina Keyzer, curator and exhibition architect.

Eight architects/architectural teams have been invited to present a large-scale model from a theme connected to basic human needs, such as love, freedom, belonging and security. In her model "public space", Christin Svensson has chosen to raise questions about freedom and limitations in Stockholm's urban space. Eveliina Sarapää explores, based on her Sami roots, how questions of heritage and belonging can be transformed into architecture. The exhibition also contains a model of a not previously presented international project by Anders Wilhelmson on the theme "love". Read more about the participants and their models on Färgfabriken's website.

Participating architects are Eugenia Bevz och Konstantin Mirosh (Sweden), Walter Hjaltested och Caterina Decker (Iceland and Switzerland), Daniel Johansson (Sweden), Daniel Norell och Einar Rodhe (Sweden), Eveliina Sarapää (Finland), Christin Svensson (Sweden), Astrid Rohde Wang (Norway) samt Anders Wilhelmson (Sweden).

The exhibition is also the starting point for the Architecture Triennial, a new platform for explorations and long-term collaborations between architects, artists and civil society organisations.

The Triennial was initiated by Färgfabriken and is envisioned as a recurring forum for architecture and urban development, a meeting place where everyone can discuss built environments and the future. The exhibition this autumn will serve as a hub for the new initiative, where both professionals and the general public can meet to explore and discuss the core issues and role of architecture in society.

Färgfabriken has a long experience of exploring critical issues for the future in dialogue with other parties. Architecture as an art form and practice has a vital part to play in creating a sustainable society, says Anna-Karin Wulgué, director of Färgfabriken. With the Architecture Triennial, we want to establish a recurring forum where we can obtain the tools needed for change, and where new knowledge and new artistic expressions can meet a larger public.

The Architecture Triennial offers a rich program of related events, focusing on children and cities, arts in the city, participatory urban development, sustainable building practices, architectural pedagogics, and much more. The program has been developed through dialogue and cooperation with several partners, for example KTH – School of Architecture and the Built Environment, IQ Samhällsbyggnad (The Swedish Centre for Innovation and Quality in the Built Environment), ACAN – Architecture Climate Action Network Sverige, OPI Lab, Luleå Biennial, Open Wood, the Italian Culture institute in Stockholm, the project Caravanize, Pralin Magasin, the film festival Crosscuts, Navet, Irish Architecture Foundation and Färgfabriken's youth council.
