Energifabriken and ScanOcean Team Up to Offer low carbon renewable Marine Fuel with Carbon Insets; Yara Sweden Takes a Decisive Step into a pilot project as an Early Adopter of Swedish-Produced RME-Based Solution.
Energifabriken and ScanOcean have joined forces to introduce an innovative, low carbon, renewable marine fuel to the market, focusing on Carbon Insets to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions within the value chain. One of the first companies to take advantage of this offer is Yara Sweden, a global leader in sustainable agriculture and industrial solutions, which is now buying a solution based on Rapeseed Methyl Ester (RME) as a renewable marine fuel to tackle its Scope 3 emissions. Yara Sweden’s sustainability focus for this case cover the transportation and delivery of their new mineral fertilizer based on renewable energy. Parts of the load goes to Swedish rapeseed farmers. These farmers aim to reach completely fossilfree primary production of feedstock to the food and biofuel industry.
By providing ISCC-EU-certified RME, the partnership between Energifabriken and ScanOcean ensures verifiable GHG reductions. The ordered volume of RME is blended and bunkered into a suitable ship, which significantly lowers the environmental impact of maritime operations, giving Yara Sweden an effective way to meet customer demands regarding reaching climate goals by reducing Scope 3-emissions.
Erik Jacobsson at Energifabriken underlines that “Our collaboration with ScanOcean makes it easier for companies across the maritime sector to transition to RME-based fuels. By focusing on Carbon Insets, we help our clients to directly reduce their own carbon footprints, driving real change in their operations and in the transportation system. We are also very interested in producing an RME-product, with significant lower emissions due to climate-smart mineral fertilizer and renewable fuels used through the whole supply chain.”
Lars Lövsund of ScanOcean stated, “Teaming up with Energifabriken allows us to offer advanced, renewable fuel alternatives at scale. Seeing Yara, a major industry player, adopt this solution underscores the readiness of forward-thinking organizations to proactively address Scope 3 emissions in shipping.”
“At Yara Sweden, our mission includes a strong commitment to sustainability. Being the first to deliver a fertilizer product based on renewable energy (Yara Climate Choice) to the market, it is in our interest to take responsibility for all stages across its value chain. Renewable fuels in the shipping industry are still hard to arrange. To integrate this RME-based solution, as a small scaled pilot project, into our maritime transport accounting demonstrates our determination to reduce greenhouse gas emissions—and to do so with a product as RME where our fertilizer is used to produce the feedstock, is a solution with great positive circular effects”, says Anders Anderson at Yara Sweden.
This alliance responds to the growing demand for direct, onboard emission-reduction solutions that address Scope3 emissions in the same sector as they occur. With Energifabriken’s expertise in renewable energy and ScanOcean’s robust logistics network, both companies are well-positioned to offer a scalable pathway toward greener shipping practices—showcased by Yara’s proactive adoption and leadership.
Energifabriken and Yara are both active partners in the newly launched AgroDrive center. AgroDrive aims to support the food industry's transition away from dependence on imported fossil energy.
