Ukrainian opera star in Vivaldi opera at Drottningholm
Rehearsals for Drottningholms Slottsteater’s production of Vivaldi’s Il Giustino start today. The opera, which has never before been staged in Sweden, will premiere on 6 August with the Ukrainian star counter tenor Yuriy Myenko singing the title role.
The conductor and director is Baroque specialist George Petrou, who interprets Il Giustino as a Baroque adult saga. The historical theatre building itself plays the lead role in this production, for which the director has drawn inspiration from the court of King Gustav III.
“This promises to be a feast for the ears and eyes,” says the theatre’s artistic and managing director, Anna Karinsdotter. “Vivaldi’s music is glorious and is performed by a top-ranking Swedish and international cast. Until almost very last second we weren’t sure if Yuriy would be able to make it, but now the ensemble can start preparing for the premiere.”
The production will make full use of Drottningholms Slottsteater’s unique machinery and host a parade of sumptuous costumes.
Conductor George Petrou is considered one of the world’s leading specialists on Baroque music. He will also be taking on the role of director in Il Giustino.
Il Giustino was originally composed for the 1724 Rome carnevale by Antonio Vivaldi to a libretto by Nicolò Beregan. Drottningholms Slottsteater was built in 1766 and is the only theatre in the world that still uses original hand operated stage machinery. The theatre is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Il Giustino is being produced with the generous support of the Friends of Drottningholms Slottsteater through the Henrik Nordmark Trust.
