Wärtsilä - DSM2022 Gold Sponsor

Interview with Roger Holm, President of Marine Power, Executive Vice President and member of the Board of Management, Wärtsilä Corporation

Wärtsilä supports DSM2022 as Gold Sponsor. What contributed to make this decision?
The event has gone from strength to strength, and we have been happy to support it for many years. We want to continue to participate in the important dialogue that happens at DSM.

What are your expectations for DSM2022?
We expect to meet many of our industry colleagues in Donsö and to continue exploring the dramatic industry transition towards decarbonisation that is only getting faster. Working together with the companies we meet, we will continue to find ways to make the future not only more environmentally friendly but also more efficient and profitable for all involved.

What is your best memory from DSM19?
The strongest memory that remains from 2019 is the number of customers and colleagues met during a very short period, and the warm atmosphere at DSM.

Why is DSM important to your business?
DSM is a fantastic opportunity to meet with a wide range of maritime stakeholders to address the challenges of the future. Donsö is home to some very progressive ship owners, and this forward thinking infuses the event. Facing the future of shipping requires a high degree of innovation, optimism and collaboration – we find all of this in our discussions with industry colleagues at DSM.

What do you find are the key issues facing the future of Shipping?
Clearly decarbonisation is the priority, driven by political, public and in many cases a personal will to tackle climate change. The issues around this are wide and varied; from the emerging availability of future fuels to managing regulatory compliance, and how to respond to the incoming complexity these issues bring across fleets and businesses in a financially viable way.

Wärtsilä aims to be ready to provide solutions whichever fuel operators use and support them across the vessel lifecycle in reaching their emission targets. But more than this, we are lending our expertise across multiple collaborative projects to make sure that the various pathways for the future of shipping are well defined and well understood – simplifying complex choices for the owners and operators on our journey to decarbonise shipping

And finally, how would you describe DSM in one sentence?
Important, informative, collaborative and exciting!

A meeting place for the maritime cluster. DSM2025, September 1-3, 2025.

Donsö Shipping Meet started in 2009 and take place every other year on the island of Donsö, in the southern part of the archipelago of Gothenburg, Sweden. Delegates from all over the world gather on the island eager to discuss shipping and shipping-related topics. A meeting place for the maritime cluster, Donsö Shipping Meet is a lively, friendly event that provides a range of opportunities for making new connections.

The place to be in 2023 was Donsö. Over the course of 3 days, 2,900 delegates from 40 countries gathered to discuss shipping and shipping related topics. 100 shipping companies and 270 exhibiting suppliers came to lend their perspectives, make new connections and forge new business opportunities. By the end of the day, on August 29, 2,100 seated guests enjoyed a three-course meal at the Banquet dinner, where Triple & Touch, Ntombie Shobede, the Star Choir and the Ocean Vocals from Donsö, performed. The Banquet dinner hosts more guests than the Nobel banquet dinner in the Stockholm City Hall!
