Doconomy and Mastercard sets global standard with Carbon Calculator

As the awareness of climate change grows and the willingness to take action increases, Mastercard launches the Mastercard Carbon Calculator. The Carbon Calculator is a result of Mastercard and Doconomy working together to develop a solution that will give card holders tools to measure and manage the CO2 impact of their spending. The Carbon Calculator is powered by the independently verified Åland Index.

New sustainability research of consumers from 24 countries reveals a rise in passion for the environment, as increasingly more individuals are resetting their views on consumption and CO2 impact. The study, commissioned by Mastercard, shows that 58% of adults across the world are more mindful of their environmental impact since the Covid-19 outbreak. And large proportion of adults (85%) are willing to take personal action to fight environmental challenges, signaling a transition to a more sustainable world. The study also shows that three in five people (62%) think it’s now more important than ever that companies and brands do more for the environment.

“Companies, consumers and communities must work together to make the significant changes needed to effectively address climate change" said Jorn Lambert, Mastercard Chief Digital Officer. "The Mastercard Carbon Calculator informs consumers about the carbon footprint of their purchases, so that they can make more mindful spending decisions and contribute to forest restoration. By embedding sustainability in the very fabric of our business, we can unlock the power of our network, reaching billions of consumers and partners, to create positive change for the environment.”

“By engaging a whole industry in enabling individual insights as well as collective action, Mastercard has redefined the role the financial industry can play in every day life in tackling the climate crisis” said Mathias Wikström, Doconomy Chief Executive Officer. “When others are talking of the importance of ESG, Mastercard is putting it to work at the fingertips of the consumer”.

With the Åland Index powered Carbon Calculator integrated across the global Mastercard network, this new digital tool bridges the gap between awareness and action when it comes to accelerating positive climate efforts. Banks can easily adopt and customize this feature to equip environmetally-conscious consumers with Information about carbon impact to help inform their spending.
