Newlife project harnesses non-invasive monitoring solutions to ensure the wellbeing of mothers and babies before and after birth

Gothenburg and Eindhoven, 19 Jun 2023 — Cuviva is a central part of Newlife, an extensive EU project, that aims to secure the health of mothers and their babies by developing novel holistic monitoring solutions. In the project, different technologies to be used will be demonstrated to enable early and non-invasive detection of risk factors in pregnancies and for newborn babies. This ground-breaking consortium project is funded through the Key Digital Technologies (KDT) Joint Undertaking with a total funding of 19,3 M€, co-financed by the project partners with a similar investment. The Newlife consortium launched their project in a kick-off event in Eindhoven in January 2023.

The project “Newlife: New remote non-invasive monitoring solutions for ensuring the health of mothers and babies before and after birth” is aiming to develop innovative non-invasive technologies for gathering vital data on mothers and babies, and build cloud-based solutions for their presentation, securing life in its most vulnerable phase. Additionally, the consortium members will research how advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) can be used to fully exploit novel technologies and solutions. For clinical acceptance, the developed solutions need to be seamlessly integrated into clinical workflows with proper data integration, security, safety, and medical qualification. The project will also ensure that the solutions are sustainable and usable.

With the developed solutions, the Newlife project will contribute to the disruption of health monitoring models by focusing on preventive actions rather than treating diseases, and by moving healthcare from hospitals to home environment.

The technologies and solutions developed are demonstrated in five use cases for both hospitals and home environments (personalized monitoring): 1) Pregnancy & parent companion; 2) Smart garment for monitoring pregnancies & complications; 3) Fetal monitoring patch for high-risk pregnancies; 4) Newborn monitoring with smart clothes; and 5) Newborn monitoring — wellbeing in bed.

KDT Joint Undertaking awarded Newlife a total of 19,3 M€ funding (6,2 M€ EU funds and 13,1 M€ national funds). Securing this funding is a significant success for the consortium and a big step towards accelerating innovation to ensure the health of mothers and babies.

The Newlife project, coordinated by Philips Electronics Netherlands, consists of a large consortium of 25 partners from 6 different European countries. There are eight research & technology organisations, thirteen small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and four large corporations from Finland, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Switzerland. The consortium will gain from the expertise of each of its members to create a cluster whose synergy will accelerate innovation, ultimately benefitting the health of mothers and babies around the world. The project will be administrated by Spinverse Oy, Finland. Cuviva is developing the Pregnancy and parent companion as well as the Healthcare staff monitoring interface.

"Cuviva has the largest number of customers, the most complete software platform, and greatest width of application for Remote Patient Monitoring and Hospital at Home in Sweden, our home market. We are also a leader in the European market. I’m very proud of how we, in close cooperation with our customers and partners, have developed the Cuviva RPM Platform over the past six years. The positive feedback and praise we receive from our customers is very rewarding. With the Newlife project we continue to develop the most complete platform for RPM, Hospital at Home and Selfcare.” - Henrik Cederqvist, CEO and Co-founder of Cuviva.
