Author Bart Moeyaert in Sweden for a week of ALMA events

The Belgian author Bart Moeyaert is coming to Sweden to take part in a week of ALMA events May 20–27, including a public lecture, school visits and a trip to Astrid Lindgren’s childhood home in Vimmerby. His visit concludes with a ceremony in the Stockholm Concert Hall on Monday May 27, in which H.R.H. Crown Princess Victoria will present him the award.

Born in Belgium in 1964, Bart Moeyaert is a multi-award- winning author who has written for children and YA since his debut at age of 19. His large and diverse body of work encompasses over fifty titles, ranging from picture books and YA works to poetry, plays, song lyrics, television screenplays and essays. His books have been translated into more than 15 languages.

The Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (ALMA) is the world's largest award for children's and young adult literature. The award, which amounts to SEK 5 million, is given annually to a single laureate or to several. Authors, illustrators, oral storytellers and reading promoters are eligible. The award is designed to promote interest in children's and young adult literature. The UN convention of rights of the child is the foundation of our work. An expert jury selects the laureate(s) from candidates nominated by institutions and organisations all over the world. The Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award was founded by the Swedish government in 2002 and is administrated by the Swedish Arts Council.

Children have the right to great stories

The Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award was created in 2002 by the Swedish government to promote every child’s right to great stories. This global award is given annually to a person or organisation for their outstanding contribution to children’s and young adult literature.
