Record Union partners up with Facebook and Instagram

From February 1st, digital music distributor Record Union will offer independent artists and music makers the opportunity to distribute their music to Facebook and Instagram. Their music will then be available for fans and users on both platforms to integrate into video content through a setup of features*, but also for themselves to use in promotion. Record Union will monetize and payout artist royalties when the music is used on Facebook and Instagram.

With a combined user base of more than three billion users worldwide, Facebook and Instagram form the largest social network in the world. Since 2018, both platforms have been developing different features where artists, fans, and users can add music to their video content and share it with friends, family, and followers.

*To date, these features include:

  • Music for Facebook and Instagram Stories; users can add a soundtrack to their story and when they do, a sticker containing the song title and artist name will show
  • Music in profiles (Facebook); users can add and highlight their favorite music on their Facebook profiles
  • Lip Sync Live (Facebook); users can live record themselves while mimicking their favorite song
  • Lasso (Facebook, US only); users can create their own creative and interesting video content by using music, videos, photos, filters, etc

By adding their music to Facebook and Instagram, artists will make it available for fans and users to integrate into all those features, and when they do the artists will get paid. The artists themselves will also have the opportunity to use their music in promotion.

- Social networks have become an integral part of a song’s life cycle, and we’re excited to enter this collaboration with Facebook and Instagram. In addition to creating new and interesting ways for artists to use their music on the platforms, Facebook helps artists in being compensated for their work by letting users add their favorite music and play with those features as well. This goes very much in line with our goal to make the music industry more democratic, accessible and transparent, says Johan Svanberg, CEO of Record Union.
