Tech know-how to go: Supercomputer MareNostrum5 in figures.

It was officially inaugurated just before Christmas 2023, our Tech-Know-how to go feature presents the MareNostrum 5 supercomputer in facts and figures:

Hosting Site: Barcelona Supercomputing Centre - Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS)

District: Barcelona Pedralbes

Area of the supercomputer:1000 square metres in the immediate vicinity of the old Girona Tower, another 2,000 square metres for the cooling system

Performance: 314 PetaFlops or 314,000 trillion calculations per second,

Technology: General Purpose Partition (CPU) is based on Intel's x86 computing architecture and achieves a peak performance of 45.4 PetaFlops thanks to the new Sapphire Rapids processor, the accelerated partition (GPU) produced by Eviden is the third most powerful in Europe and the eighth most powerful worldwide according to the LINPACK benchmark, with a peak performance of 260 PetaFlops.

Placement in the TOP500 list:8th place and 19th place

Acquisition costs for the system:around 151.4 million euros over 5 years, 50 per cent European Commission, 35.13 per cent Spain, 5 per cent Portugal and 9.87 per cent Turkey.

Fields of application: EU project "Destination Earth", which aims to create a complete virtual replica of planet Earth in order to predict the effects of climate change; development of new drugs, vaccines or simulation of the spread of viruses, training of neural networks

Knowledge to show off:Marenostrum 5 is 10,000 times more powerful than the first version 20 years ago (MareNostrum 1, 2004) and 23 times more powerful than Marenostrum 4 (2017).
