Powder alert in Hafjell and Kvitfjell!
HAFJELL AND KVITFJELL, Some alerts are better waking up to than others. Right now the amount of snow is turning on the powder alarm in both Hafjell and Kvitfjell.
When it rains in the city, its snowing in the mountains! During the last week alone the east and southern parts of Norway has received some huge amounts of snow. For Hafjell and Kvitfjell, the two ski resorts owned by Alpinco located just north of Lillehammer, large amounts of snow have fallen turning this winter season into a powder bonanza early into the new year.
Turning to Norway
Both resorts has received between 70-90 cm of snow in the last two days alone. Looking at the situation in parts of Europe, with green slopes and very little snow, this means that a lot of ski guests now reroute their planned ski trip and head to Norway.
- We are not going to shout hurray for hot temperatures in Europe, but we can shout hurray for the snow fall we have, and still are, receiving. It is absolutely fantastic. It pours down in both our destinations and the skiing for all our guests is naturally amazing at the moment. Right now the Norwegian winter is at its best, says Head of Communications at Alpinco, Veslemøy Eineteig Wedum.
More and more major tour operators, especially in Denmark, are now reaching out as they have guests that want to rebook their ski holidays from Europe to Norway.
- The fact that the flow of travel is turning is probably a combination of many things, but we see that many people are now choosing to rebook their trips. With these snow conditions we hardly need a higher snow guarantee, she says.
Be careful
Across Norway, the ski resorts report a lot of snow and prospects for even more. The same applies to Hafjell and Kvitfjell. At the same time, they encourage people to be careful in the mountains with all this snow. Especially in Kvitfjell during the last weekend there were several rescue operations where people simply got stuck in the snow.
- The danger level is set at 3 and the avalanche danger is significantly outside the groomed trails all through the mountain. Do not ski in steep and avalanche-prone terrain - and do not ski alone outside groomed trails, says the general manager of Alpinco, Odd Stensrud.
According to Stensrud, it is not often that they experience this amounts of snow in such a short time.
- It is very positive for the rest of the winter with such quantities, which also tempts many people out into the fresh snow. It's fun with lots of people and snow! We therefore encourage everyone to use common sense and make informed choices where they ski, he says.
