Exhibition at Carbon Capture Technology Expo Europe ~ NGK exhibits ceramic substrates for DAC systems and Ceramic membrane capable of gas separation and dehydration ~

NGK INSULATORS, LTD. (“NGK”) exhibits its Direct Air Capture (DAC) products and sub-nano ceramic membranes at the Carbon Capture Technology Expo Europe to be held at Messe Bremen (Germany) from September 27th (Wed.) to 28th (Thu.).

Carbon Capture Technology Expo Europe 2023 will gather over 6,500visitors to address the increasing role of Carbon Capture, Utilization & Storage (CCUS) which plays a critical role in the transition to Carbon Neutrality. At Carbon Capture Technology Expo, NGK will showcase products that contribute to CCUS, such as ceramic products for DAC systems that directly capture CO2 from the atmosphere and 'sub-nano ceramic membranes' capable of gas separation and dehydration at the molecular level. NGK will also introduce SOEC-related technologies at the booth.

  • Ceramic products for DAC systems

Direct Air Capture (DAC) is a technology for capturing CO2 contained in the atmosphere via direct adsorption or absorption. Projections suggest DAC will absorb approximately 1 billion tons* of CO2 from the atmosphere by the year 2050. DAC has entered the spotlight as a technology with the potential to help achieve carbon neutrality. Since the concentration of atmospheric CO2 is approximately 0.04%—extremely low—large volumes of air must be treated efficiently to adsorb or absorb significant amounts of carbon.

A honeycomb structure substrate for DAC currently being developed by NGK offers compact dimensions, large surface area, and low-pressure loss (ability to efficiently treat large volumes of air), which are required for DAC contactor, by applying the ceramic honeycomb structure technology cultivated through the development of ceramic substrates for automotive catalytic converters for decades. Through its unique ceramic technology, NGK aim to diversify into the DAC market by providing ceramic products for DAC systems.

  • Sub-nano ceramic membranes

Sub-nano ceramic membranes are ceramic separation membranes (ceramic filters) that feature especially fine sub-nano* class pores. They are capable of separation at the molecular level. NGK has developed various sub-nano ceramic membranes capable of separating specific gases or liquids from gas-liquid mixtures.

Sub-nanoceramic membranes are expected to be applied to the following H2-related applications.
- Mixed gas separation (H2/N2) after cracking when NH3 is used as the H2 carrier.
- Separation at the terminal (H2/CH4) when H2 is mixed and transported in a natural gas pipeline
These products are instrumental to establishing innovative separation processes that dramatically reduce both costs and energy consumption.
* Sub-nano: less than 1 nm (nanometer); 1 nm = 0.000001 mm.
