The Next Book Report: Romance, gardening and long stories are trending in the world of books

Romantic stories are increasing in popularity, more people prefer long reads and the genre home and gardening is blossoming. These are the key trends that are presented when Nextory is releasing “The Next Book Report” for the second time, a nordic trend and insights report that maps unique data from readers and listeners in the Nextory app.

– Right now it’s very obvious that we’re influenced by the world around us when choosing what to read. Many people are in need of extra relaxation or escaping reality for a while, and of course a love story or a book about gardening fits perfectly then. It’s truly exciting that the interest for some genres can start to blossom again in just three months. Perhaps, we might have spotted a break in a trend this quarter? That more people are starting to prefer longer stories - instead of shorter formats, says Gustaf Sköld, COO at Nextory.

Love is in the air - and books
The consumption of romance literature has increased rapidly in the Nordic countries. In-app searches for words such as romance, passion, erotica and Harlequin have also increased by more than 20 percent during the second quarter.

Longer stories are requested
The trend “the shorter the better” has been clear in the world of books for a while, but Nextory is potentially seeing a new direction here. For a long time, the most popular book length has been six to nine hours. However, now readers and listeners instead prefer books that are nine to 12 hours long. In addition, the consumption of books that are 18 to 21 hours long have increased by nearly 20 percent.

Home and gardening is blooming
The interest for home decoration and gardening got a huge boost during the start of the pandemic, and have kept on blooming ever since. More than ever. The consumption of the books in the genre “Home
& Gardening” has increased by as much as 37 percent during this year’s second quarter.
