​Treasures from the Nationalmuseum of Sweden at The Morgan Library & Museum

Nationalmuseum and The Morgan Library & Museum collaborates in the exhibition Treasures from Nationalmuseum of Sweden opening February 3. More than 75 masterpieces from the collection of Swedish count Carl Gustaf Tessin, now owned by Nationalmuseum, are brought to New York for a rare visit. The show includes works by artists such as Dürer, Raphael, Rubens, Rembrandt, Watteau and Boucher.

​Nationalmuseum Design presents Eero Aarnio

During Stockholm Design Week 2017, an exhibition by and about Finnish interior designer Eero Aarnio will open at Nationalmuseum Design. Aarnio is one of the best-known figures internationally in the history of modern Finnish design. He made his name in the 1960s with his experimental designs and his futuristic reinforced plastic chairs.

Nationalmuseum and the Louvre makes an exhibition about the Swedish count Carl Gustaf Tessin, opening in Paris 20 October. It comprises an exclusive selection of 120 paintings and drawings from Tessin’s own art collection, now owned by Nationalmuseum, that documents how artistic styles and tastes evolved in Paris at the height of the Rococo period.

​Nationalmuseum lends leading fin de siècle art to museum in France

Light and stillness – Scandinavian art at the turn of the 20th century opens on Saturday 24 September at the Musée Toulouse-Lautrec in Albi. The exhibition comprises some of the best examples of Scandinavian painting from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, all on loan from Nationalmuseum.

On Friday 2 September, Embodied opens at Nationalmuseum Design, an exhibition of works that challenge the conventional notion of craft. The exhibiting artists share an interest in the corporeal, often related to social issues such as identity, body image, objectification, and power structures.

This autumn, Nationalmuseum Design presents Embodied, an exhibition of works that challenge the conventional notion of craft. The exhibiting artists share an interest in the corporeal, often related to social issues such as identity, body image, objectification, and power structures. These works exist at the interface of outer and inner, of skin and organs.

​The exhibition Ingegerd Råman opens on Friday 3 June

On Friday 3 June, Ingegerd Råman opens at Nationalmuseum Design. In this exhibition, one of Sweden’s most influential designers presents a personal selection of the projects and commissions she has worked on, with commentary in the form of sketches, videos and captions. The exhibition is coproduced with Vandalorum in Värnamo, where it will go on show this autumn.

​The Jeweller’s Art – summer exhibition at Läckö Castle

Continuing its programming on the theme of art jewellery, Nationalmuseum is presenting an exhibition titled The Jeweller’s Art at Läckö Castle this summer. On show will be some 300 pieces – tiaras, necklaces, brooches, snuff boxes, pocket watches and miniature portraits – dating from 1650 to the present day. The materials range from gold, pearls and diamonds to plastic, eggshell and perch skin.

Nationalmuseum, Moderna Museet and Konstakademien are showcasing the strengths of their respective collections by bringing together works from different eras in a co-produced exhibition titled The Artist. On show will be close to 100 works by some of the biggest names in art history, from Rubens and Rembrandt via Renoir and Picasso to Cindy Sherman.

Innovative glass at Nationalmuseum Design this summer

​On 17 June, an exhibition with the title Glass is Tomorrow opens at Nationalmuseum Design, located inside Kulturhuset Stadsteatern in Stockholm. The result of an international project to highlight the potential of glass, the exhibition will feature around 200 glass pieces and prototypes co-created and produced in workshops held at various glassworks across Europe.

An exhibition on and by photographer Denise Grünstein will open at Nationalmuseum on 19 February. The exhibition is based on the art project that the photographer ran in the empty museum building earlier this year. Nationalmuseum has made a major loan of works to the Pehr Hilleström exhibition at the Sinebrychoff Art Museum in Helsinki. The loan comprises some 20 works by this artist best known for his documentary paintings of 18th-century Stockholm. The exhibition opens on 4 September and runs until 11 January.

Russian art coming to Nationalmuseum this autumn

Following the success of the Peredvizhniki exhibition, Nationalmuseum is featuring Russian art in a wider perspective this autumn. From Tsars to Commissars will be an exhibition of works by artists who came before and after the Peredvizhniki. Co-produced with the Russian Museum in St Petersburg, the exhibition will include Russian and Soviet art from the 19th century through to 1960.

Welcome to Nationalmuseum Sweden!

Nationalmuseum is Sweden’s museum of art and design. The collections include paintings, sculpture, drawings and graphic art from the 16th century up to the beginning of the 20th century and the collection of applied art and design up to the present day. The total amount of objects is around 700,000. .

The emphasis of the collection of paintings is on Swedish 18th and 19th century painting. Dutch painting from the 17th century is also well represented, and the French 18th century collection is regarded as one of the best in the world. The works are made by artists such as Rembrandt, Rubens, Goya, Boucher, Watteau, Renoir and Degas as well as Swedish artists such as Anders Zorn, Carl Larsson, Ernst Josephson and Carl Fredrik Hill.

The collection of applied art and design consists of objects such as ceramics, textiles, glass and precious and non-precious metals as well as furniture and books etc. The collection of prints and drawings comprises works by Rembrandt, Watteau, Manet, Sergel, Carl Larsson, Carl Fredrik Hill and Ernst Josephson. Central are the 2,000 master drawings that Carl Gustaf Tessin acquired during his tour of duty as Sweden's ambassador to France in the 18th century.

Art and objects from Nationalmuseum’s collections can also be seen at several royal palaces such as Gripsholm, Drottningholm, Strömsholm, Rosersberg and Ulriksdal as well as in the Swedish Institute in Paris. The museum administers the Swedish National Portrait Gallery at Gripsholm Castle, the world’s oldest national portrait gallery and the Gustavsberg collection with approximately 45,000 objects manufactured at the Gustavsberg Porcelain Factory. Nationalmuseum also curates exhibitions at Nationalmuseum Jamtli and the Gustavsberg Porcelain Museum.

Nationalmuseum is a government authority with a mandate to preserve cultural heritage and promote art, interest in art and knowledge of art and that falls within the remit of the Swedish Ministry of Culture.
