Press release -

Morrow Batteries and ABB collaborate on manufacturing technology and comprehensive battery solutions

Morrow Batteries and ABB have signed a letter of intent for support on automation, electrification, and digitization of Morrow's planned facilities in southern Norway. In addition, the companies also intend to collaborate on a common go-to-market approach, with highly developed battery solutions as well as energy storage systems.

“Our mission is to accelerate the green energy transition by developing and manufacturing cost effective and sustainable batteries. In southern Norway we are building world-leading battery cell capabilities, and together with ABB we look forward to exploring the possibilities where we can deliver world class battery solutions”, says Terje Andersen, CEO of Morrow Batteries.

Manufacturing facilities for global market

The green transition pushes entire industries toward a more sustainable and efficient technological development. ABB is a world-leading technology company that delivers energy systems, robotics- and automation technologies and other applications to a wide range of market segments.

“Morrow Batteries’ ambitious plans for large-scale, cutting edge R&D and manufacturing is crucial for the energy transition, increased sustainability and reindustrialization of Norway”, says Per Erik Holsten, country managing director of ABB in Norway and head of Energy Industries for Northern Europe.

“We are committed to being a partner to Morrow Batteries’ in their endeavours to become a global leader in battery technology.”

At their comprehensive facilities in Skien, Norway, ABB boasts world-class R&D and manufacturing of highly advanced electrical and power equipment for electrification of society and the global renewables market, supporting the energy transition and a sustainable future. Not far from there, Morrow is building its 42 GWh battery cell factory. Recently Morrow formalized the partnership with Arendal Municipality, ensuring approximately 940 000 square meters land with easily accessible infrastructure.

Morrow has a battery technology roadmap that meets the extreme requirements for safety, volume, and efficiency for various industries, as well as the demand for cost effective solutions for energy storage systems.

Automated state-of-the-art facilities

Later this year Morrow will start the construction of its Battery Innovation Centre and the Pilot factory and in 2023 its first giga-factory module. The facilities will be fully automated and digitized and one of few in Europe that can manage today’s proven state-of-the-art battery technology as well as the future technology of battery cell development and manufacturing.

“ABB will be an important partner to ensure world class automatization and digitalization of our facilities and is capable to manage the manufacturing process from the incoming of materials to the output of battery cells-products”, says Terje Andersen.

About Morrow Batteries:

Morrow’s ambition is to develop and manufacture the world’s most cost-effective and sustainable battery cells. The company’s vision is to enable and accelerate the green energy transition through the production of sustainable batteries. Based in the southern parts of Norway, Morrow is currently in the process of establishing its 42 GWh Giga-factory which utilizes 100% renewable hydroelectric power to manufacture batteries with the lowest possible CO2 footprint.

The factory will be operational from Q4 2024. To accelerate development and qualify its products for key market segments, Morrow is building an industrialization center which support the company’s vision to create sustainable batteries. With these facilities, Morrow and the company’s partners are establishing ‘the Battery coast’ – a sustainable eco system built around the battery value chain.

Morrow Batteries was founded in 2020 by strong and committed owners. The two leading investors are Agder Energi Venture, a wholly owned subsidiary of Agder Energi, and NOAH, a wholly owned subsidiary of Gjelsten Holding.
