KommuneKredit announces responsibility report – green transition and sustainability play a central role

Responsibility is an integrated part of KommuneKredit's business model. The association supports local development and growth by funding local investments in construction and infrastructure, including the green transition of the society. This is done on a nonprofit basis and on equal terms regardless of location.

The Danish municipalities and regions are in the process of planning and implementing green transition initiatives; initiatives that KommuneKredit supports by providing funding at the lowest possible cost. The initiatives are green and climate-friendly investments in local communities, for example climate adaption, coastal protection, public transportation, energy optimization of public buildings and sustainable utilities.

In 2019, KommuneKredit issued its third green bond (EUR 500m) and has introduced a certificate for green loan borrowers. Furthermore, the association, among other things, abolished the use of plastic water bottles in-house, integrated UN’s sustainable development goals into its work with social responsibility and achieved an improved ESG-rating (Environment, Social, Governance). In 2020, sustainable financing will play a central role in our business development. One ambition is to increase the issuance of green bonds.

KommuneKredit plays a significant role in funding the local green transition of our society. For this reason, it is natural for us to step up our efforts on sustainability and green financing, which are key elements in our coming strategic development,” says KommuneKredit’s CEO Jens Lundager.

KommuneKredit creates value for society – also during times of crisis

As a result of COVID-19, the Danish Government has lifted the 2020 cap on the local governments’ capital investments paving the way for increased construction and renovation activity in municipalities and regions.

We can cover the funding needs of our members – also during the present situation where the financial markets are unstable. KommuneKredit is a safe haven also during times of crisis,” adds Jens Lundager.

KommuneKredit

KommuneKredit is a Danish special-purpose credit institution, providing funding for the local growth and green transition in municipalities and regions across Denmark.

KommuneKredit is an association with sustainability at its core and a strong ESG profile. Our member base consists of all Danish municipal and regional authorities. Our guarantee structure and safe business model have secured us a premium credit rating (AAA) (Aaa).

That is why we can offer municipalities and regions instant and uncomplicated access to financing of projects large or small and at the lowest possible cost. With equal opportunities and terms for all – across the entire country.

That is how it has been since 1899, when KommuneKredit first disbursed a loan. And that is the way it is today, as our dedicated employees advise on and arrange more than 2,000 loans every year.

When investors buy our bonds, we can disburse loans for purposes ranging from energy renovation of a local sports centre to the purchase of a new eco-friendly hybrid ferry, or the establishment of more sustainable district heating systems across the country.

For the benefit of ordinary citizens, for our local communities, and for an even greener future.
