Politecnico di Milano ranked second in Italy and is among the top 100 worldwide in the ranking that assesses universities against the 17 UN sustainability goals

Milan, June 2023 - Politecnico di Milano is ranked second in Italy and 91st in the world in the overall THE Impact Ranking 2023, climbing seven positions (it was 98th in 2022).

Active since 2019, this ranking quantifies how universities are contributing to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda and involves a total of 1,591 universities worldwide.

Politecnico di Milano's best performance is in SDG 9 Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure: 16th place worldwide (18th last year).
The important laboratory network consists of 6 large infrastructure used both for research purposes and by companies, 245 research laboratories and 34 interdepartmental laboratories. As of December 2022, there were 82 active spin-offs at Politecnico di Milano and 2,925 individual patents.
New research laboratories are planned in the sectors of aerospace, circular economy, mobility and energy transition.

They also came in top positions in SDG 8 Decent Work and Economic Growth, ranking 37th(up from 59th last year), and SDG 10 Reduced Inequalities, ranking 28th (45th in 2022).
In this respect, Politecnico continues its two main strategic programmes aiming to ensure equal opportunities for everyone in both study and work:

Politecnico's Equal Opportunities Programme (POP), which aims to provide a study and work environment that honours gender identity, disability, culture and background, and SCHOLARSHIPS@POLIMI, several scholarship programmes to ensure equal rights to education for all and promote the enrolment of underrepresented groups.

'Our commitment to promoting a culture of sustainable development in all our institutional activities, teaching and research is unwavering and the initial results prove this' - comments Donatella Sciuto, Rector of Politecnico di Milano. 'A journey that has only just begun but which involves effort from the entire university community on at least four fronts: environmental sustainability, promotion of responsible research, international cooperation and equal opportunities'.

The methodology applied to calculate THE Impact Rankings 2023 requires each university to independently select a minimum of four sustainable development goals against which it wants to be measured.

The ranking measures the impact of research and teaching on topics related to the SDGs, the responsible management of university's resources by staff, professors and students, the active engagement of national stakeholders and uses both quantitative indicators (citations, publications, etc.) and information on the programmeslaunched by the universities.

Working with society and helping it achieve the Sustainable Development Goals at global, national and local level is an integral part of the mission of a university such as Politecnico di Milano, which is firmly anchored both in its community context and in the global academic environment.

Topics

Politecnico di Milano is a scientific-technological university which trains engineers, architects and industrial designers.

The University has always focused on the quality and innovation of its teaching and research, developing a fruitful relationship with business and productive world by means of experimental research and technological transfer.

Research has always been linked to didactics and it is a priority commitment which has allowed Politecnico Milano to achieve high quality results at an international level as to join the university to the business world. Research constitutes a parallel path to that formed by cooperation and alliances with the industrial system.

Knowing the world in which you are going to work is a vital requirement for training students. By referring back to the needs of the industrial world and public administration, research is facilitated in following new paths and dealing with the need for constant and rapid innovation. The alliance with the industrial world, in many cases favored by Fondazione Politecnico and by consortiums to which Politecnico belong, allows the university to follow the vocation of the territories in which it operates and to be a stimulus for their development.

The challenge which is being met today projects this tradition which is strongly rooted in the territory beyond the borders of the country, in a relationship which is developing first of all at the European level with the objective of contributing to the creation of a single professional training market. Politecnico takes part in several research, sites and training projects collaborating with the most qualified European universities. Politecnico's contribution is increasingly being extended to other countries: from North America to Southeast Asia to Eastern Europe. Today the drive to internationalization sees Politecnico Milano taking part into the European and world network of leading technical universities and it offers several courses beside many which are entirely taught in English.
