Politecnico di Milano ranked 13th in the world for Engineering

The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2022 also confirms the university's excellence in Architecture and Design

Milan, 6 April 2022 - The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2022 boosts the Politecnico di Milano's upward trend.

In the case of Engineering, the University has climbed 11 places in the rankings over the last six years to reach 13th place in the world in this new ranking (from 24th place in 2016).

In Architecture and Design it rose five places: from 15th and 10th in 2016 to 10th and 5th last year, also confirmed by the new ranking.

Compared to last year, within the Engineering macro-category, the Politecnico climbed significantly in chemical engineering (+7 positions), civil engineering (+2), mechanical engineering (+2), electrical and electronic engineering (+3), materials engineering (+21),

and environmental engineering (+8).

This result has been possible thanks to targeted strategic action from the Politecnico di Milano over the last six years. This included consolidating links with companies, including support for start-ups and business development, by setting up a number of Joint Research Centres.

Academic Reputation is the most important indicator in the ranking (it makes up 40% of the final assessment), based on the appraisals of more than 130,000 academics from all over the world. This figure confirms the positive opinions of other national and international universities about the Politecnico.

In recent years, the Politecnico di Milano has built a model of close alliances between the most important European technological universities, with the aim of creating a new academic space for interaction between technological progress, society and the environment. Thanks to this internationalisation process, the Politecnico has succeeded in achieving one of its primary missions in the last three years, becoming a "European Leading University", capable of leading scientific and technological research and innovation to contribute to sustainable and inclusive development.

“The result achieved is very positive and we are proud of it”, comments Ferruccio Resta, Rector of the Politecnico di Milano, “Not only because of the renewed success in the fields of architecture and design, which are world class, but above all because of the improved position in engineering, a highly competitive field that is more difficult for Italian universities to break into. This is not a pleasant surprise, but rather a deserved recognition of the value of the policies implemented in recent years: from investment in research infrastructure to international alliances. This is an important indicator of our reputation and our appeal to talented researchers and students, both inside and outside our borders. Our country, the world's 7th largest economy, should aspire to have at least one university among the world's top ten in every discipline."

In the Italian panorama, the Politecnico di Milano is the undisputed leader in Architecture and Design and for almost all engineering subjects (Computer Science & Information Systems; Chemical Engineering; Civil & Structural Engineering; Electrical & Electronic Engineering; Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing Engineering).

The ranking

The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2022 is the ranking of the world's best universities by subject area and now covers 51 disciplines divided into five macro areas. Rankings by subject aim to guide students to choose universities by discipline of interest.

Each ranking by subject is based on four sources. The first two are the opinions of academics and companies collected through a survey conducted the previous year for the global university ranking, QS World University Rankings. The other two sources concern the impact of research, which is analysed from Elvesier's Scopus database, the world's largest database for scientific publications and citations. Each of these four components has a different weighting depending on the discipline.

To produce the 2022 ranking, QS considered 1,543 universities in 161 countries.

Politecnico di Milano is a scientific-technological university which trains engineers, architects and industrial designers.

The University has always focused on the quality and innovation of its teaching and research, developing a fruitful relationship with business and productive world by means of experimental research and technological transfer.

Research has always been linked to didactics and it is a priority commitment which has allowed Politecnico Milano to achieve high quality results at an international level as to join the university to the business world. Research constitutes a parallel path to that formed by cooperation and alliances with the industrial system.

Knowing the world in which you are going to work is a vital requirement for training students. By referring back to the needs of the industrial world and public administration, research is facilitated in following new paths and dealing with the need for constant and rapid innovation. The alliance with the industrial world, in many cases favored by Fondazione Politecnico and by consortiums to which Politecnico belong, allows the university to follow the vocation of the territories in which it operates and to be a stimulus for their development.

The challenge which is being met today projects this tradition which is strongly rooted in the territory beyond the borders of the country, in a relationship which is developing first of all at the European level with the objective of contributing to the creation of a single professional training market. Politecnico takes part in several research, sites and training projects collaborating with the most qualified European universities. Politecnico's contribution is increasingly being extended to other countries: from North America to Southeast Asia to Eastern Europe. Today the drive to internationalization sees Politecnico Milano taking part into the European and world network of leading technical universities and it offers several courses beside many which are entirely taught in English.
