Different Types of Electric Motors Used In Aircrafts

The DC motor or the Direct Current motor is used in a wide variety of applications which include radio controlled aircrafts. It is mainly used to convert electrical energy into mechanical energy. The brushed motor, the stepper motor and the brushless are the three different types of direct current motors available today.

The brushless are most popularly used in model aircrafts and helicopters. These devices are available in a huge range of sizes to suit different applications. With the use of these motors, there has been a substantial increase in the use of simple and light weight model electric aircrafts. These brushless and modern batteries allow the model airplanes to ascend vertically. Another main reason for its growing popularity is that these motors are less noisy and messy compared to the internal combustion engines. However, Direct Current motors are seldom used in commercial aircrafts. It is only used in model aeroplanes.

These are expensive but more efficient than the other types of electric motors. As these motors do not include brushes, there is less or no friction. It requires less maintenance compared to the other types of motors. These have a rotor and a commutator which reverses the current direction. As it is highly durable, it can be used for a wide range of applications apart from airplanes.

The Direct Current motors have different torque and speed which varies according to the load of the application. These motors are categorized on the basis of various configurations. Most of these motors display different performance features and so it can be chosen according to the type of application for which it is to be used.

In addition to Direct Current motors, AC motors are also used in aircrafts. These motors are quite advantageous for aircrafts as the AC power is constantly available. It also offers a cost efficient solution to most of these applications. The AC motors are basically used in applications where the motors are constantly running in an aircraft which include flight instruments, fuel booster pumps, air conditioning cooling fans and so forth. The AC motors are simple in construction and it is quite reliable. It is therefore widely used in most of the commercial airplanes in different sections.

The electric powered airplanes are gaining immense popularity as the motors used in these airplanes are clean and quiet compared to the combustion motors.

In addition to the brushed and brushless motors, DC motors also include stepper motors. It is used for various applications such as scanners, floppy disc, toys and so forth. Stepper motors which are computer controlled are made available through many of the offline and online stores at various price rates. These devices include low power but it can be controlled easily through an external controller.

Various types of Direct Current motors are showcased in many of the online stores at different price rates. Different types of electrical motors are also sold by authentic dealers and manufacturers through numerous online portals.
